In brief
Finass Advies works as an independent broker with more than thirty companies; Klaverblad is one of them. We do not choose a brand in advance. First we establish which cover suits your car and your use, then which conditions fill that in best, and only then does the premium come into the picture. On one application Klaverblad comes out best from that order, on another it does not.
On a private car policy the difference rarely lies in the names of the covers. Third-party liability is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and covers only damage to others. The structure above that is explained at Third-party liability with fire and theft and comprehensive cover. The difference lies in the limits: up to what age or market value a company still offers comprehensive cover, what security is required against theft, how glass damage is handled and how far you fall back after an at-fault claim.
Those points do not appear in a quotation but in the policy conditions and on the policy schedule. We read them through before you sign, so that you know which clauses apply to your situation. An overview of this company's full private range is set out at Klaverblad personal lines.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

What to look out for
Four conditions that matter more on a private car policy than the difference in premium.
Up to what age comprehensive is still available
Insurers apply a limit above which they no longer insure a car comprehensively, expressed in age or in market value. If your car is close to it, that is the moment to review whether own-damage cover is still worthwhile. In a total loss you receive the market value, after all, and that falls faster than the premium.
Security requirements for theft cover
For theft-prone models a security clause appears on the policy schedule: a certified alarm, sometimes with a vehicle tracking system and subscription. That is a condition of cover, not a recommendation. If the system was not switched on or the subscription had expired at the time of the theft, there is no theft cover.
Glass damage: repair takes precedence over replacement
Most policies pay for glass repair without an excess and replacement with an excess, provided you use an approved repairer. On modern windscreens with cameras for driver assistance systems, calibration costs are added. Check whether those costs fall within the glass cover or under the ordinary own-damage part.
The no-claims scale and the no-claims protector
After an at-fault claim you drop a number of steps and that works through into your premium for years. A no-claims protector prevents that fall back for one claim a year, but is often only offered from a certain number of no-claims years. See no-claims years and no-claims discount.
What does your premium depend on?
- Age and no-claims years: of the regular driver
- List price and weight: determine which rating group the car falls into
- Postcode where the vehicle is kept: based on regional claims and theft figures
- Type of cover chosen: third-party liability, third-party liability with fire and theft, or comprehensive cover
- Annual mileage: a lower declaration usually gives a discount
- Excess: a voluntarily increased excess brings the own-damage premium down
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| A branch blown down damages the roof of your parked car during a storm | No | Yes |
| You put petrol in your diesel car and drive on until the engine gives out | No | Provided that |
| Fire breaks out in the charging cable while your electric car is charging on the drive | No | Yes |
| Your son drives your car and damages the side of a van | Yes | Yes |
| After four years the battery in your electric car only reaches two-thirds of its range | No | No |
| You leave the road on a bend and end up in a ditch, with no other party involved | No | Yes |
Under third-party liability the insurer pays only the other party's loss; everything that happens to your own car stands or falls with the own-damage cover.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Is Klaverblad the cheapest car insurer?
That question cannot be answered in general terms. Insurers apply different rating groups and underwriting criteria, so the same car works out cheaper with one company than with another. We compare your situation objectively across more than thirty companies, looking at conditions and premium together, not at premium alone.
What is excluded as standard?
Wear, mechanical defects and design faults are never covered. Also driving without a valid licence or during a driving ban, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and use for hire, driving lessons or carriage for payment. Damage through intent or wilful recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. Theft with the key in or near the car is almost always refused.
How do I switch to another company?
Once the first contract year is over, you can usually end car insurance on any day. You request a no-claims statement setting out your no-claims years. The new insurer takes those over. Have the start date of the new policy follow on from the end date of the old one, so that no uninsured day arises.
Am I covered abroad?
The green card is decisive: the countries listed on it fall within the territorial scope, countries crossed out do not. For own damage abroad, additional provisions often apply about repatriation and replacement transport. Check that before you leave and report claims straight away; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires this.
