In brief

Finass acts as an intermediary for motor insurance and objectively compares what several insurers offer. Rhion is one of them. We do not choose a company first and then look for a policy to go with it. We first establish what cover you need. Only then comes the question of which insurer will accept that risk and on what terms. For one person that is Rhion, for another a different provider.

With motor insurance the choice turns first on the form of cover. Third-party liability is required by law and only pays for damage you cause to other people with your car. Third-party, fire and theft adds a fixed list of events to that, such as theft, fire, storm and glass damage. Comprehensive cover also pays for damage to your own car that you cause yourself. What exactly is included in each form is set out under Third-party liability plus third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover.

The second point is the acceptance. Insurers differ widely in what they accept: a high-powered car, an imported vehicle, a driver with no no-claims years or a claims history over recent years may pass through the application without comment at one company and lead to a loading, a higher excess or a rejection at another. We check that in advance, so that you are not presented with an amended proposal after acceptance.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four points which, with an application through Rhion as with other companies, make the difference between a payment and no payment.

No-claims years come from the register

Your discount is based on the number of no-claims years held in the central register, not on what you declare. Insurers report claims and cancellations to it. If your declaration does not match the register, the premium is adjusted after acceptance. If you have not yet built up any years, read insuring a car without no-claims years.

The regular driver must be correct

The policy assumes one regular driver. If in practice someone else mainly drives the car, for example a child living at home, that is a circumstance you must report when you apply. If you do not, the insurer can rely on the Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and reduce or refuse the payout.

The use of the car determines the cover

Hire, car-sharing platforms and paid passenger transport are almost always excluded under private motor insurance. The same goes for taking part in competitions, speed trials and driver training on a circuit. If you also use the car for business, report it. It is not an obstacle, but it is a fact that belongs on the policy schedule.

Alcohol, drugs and the absence of a licence

Driving under the influence or without a valid licence is a standard exclusion. The third-party liability cover remains in place towards the victim, because the law requires that protection, but the insurer recovers the amount paid from you. Damage to your own car is not paid for in that case. Also damage caused intentionally is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Make, type and power: the rating group follows from the list price and engine power
  • No-claims years: the main discount on the premium
  • Age and place of residence: postcode area and age count towards the rate
  • Cover chosen: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
  • Excess: a higher excess on own-damage cover lowers the premium
  • Annual mileage: more kilometres means a greater chance of a claim

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I take out the insurance with Rhion or with Finass?

The insurance contract is made with the insurer; Finass acts as adviser and intermediary. We handle the application, the administration of the policy and support when you claim. The policy schedule states which company carries the risk. You can come to us with questions about cover and changes, including after the policy has started.

Can I switch if I already have a motor policy running?

Yes. Most motor policies can be cancelled at any time after the first contract year, subject to one month's notice. We arrange the changeover so that there is not a single day without cover. That matters because the registered keeper must be insured without interruption under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). The no-claims years you have built up transfer to the new policy.

What happens to my premium after a claim?

A claim where the insurer pays and cannot recover the amount leads to a step back on the no-claims scale. Glass damage and claims recovered in full from the other party generally do not count. How long a step back works through is set out under how long you keep your no-claims years.

Do I have to report a claim I want to pay for myself?

You must report it as soon as you are reasonably aware of it; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires that. You may then say that you do not wish to claim. In a collision, do not admit liability and complete the European Accident Statement together with the other party.
