In brief
Dealer Service is a label under which car insurance is signed up when a car is bought. Such a policy comes about through an underwriting agent or an insurer behind that label. Who actually carries the risk is set out on the policy schedule and in the policy conditions. Finass Advies is an independent broker with access to more than thirty companies and assesses such a policy on the same points as any other: cover, clauses and underwriting policy.
With insurance that arises at the sales desk, three things stand out. The policy often contains a repair clause that sends you to a brand-affiliated repairer. The cover is regularly linked to the finance or lease contract, so that a payment in a total loss goes to the financier first. And if you trade in for another make, you have to decide yourself whether the policy moves with you or ends.
The compulsory third-party liability cover follows from Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and pays only for damage you cause to others with the car. What you choose on top of that determines whether damage to your own car is covered. What has been added to it can be read at Third-party liability with fire and theft and comprehensive cover.

What to look out for
Four points that raise questions more often on a dealer label policy than the premium itself.
Label, underwriting agent and risk carrier
A trading name is not an insurer. On a delegated authority policy, an underwriting agent takes out the insurance on behalf of a company and also handles claims. What matters for you is who carries the risk and which conditions have been declared applicable. So always ask for the full booklet of conditions and not only the product flyer.
Brand-affiliated repairs
Many dealer policies have a clause requiring repairs at a designated firm. If you choose a free repairer anyway, usually a an increased excess applies or the right to replacement transport lapses. If you want to keep a free choice, have that recorded in advance. That argument cannot be won afterwards.
Link to finance or lease
If a financier appears on the policy schedule, an own-damage payment after theft or a total loss is paid to them first. If a residual debt remains, that is your problem: the difference between the market value and the outstanding credit falls outside the car insurance. For that, look at the arrangement under financial lease and private lease.
Switching and your no-claims years
After the first contract year, car insurance usually continues indefinitely and you can end it any day. You request a cancellation statement; it sets out your no-claims years, which belong to the regular driver and not to the registration number. How long they remain valid can be read at no-claims years.
What does your premium depend on?
- Age and no-claims years: of the regular driver, not of the registered keeper
- Type of cover chosen: third-party liability, third-party liability with fire and theft, or comprehensive cover
- List price and weight: determine the rating group the car falls into
- Postcode where the vehicle is kept: the chance of theft and collision differs per region
- Annual mileage: more mileage means more exposure
- Excess and choice of repairer: free choice of workshop usually costs extra
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| While pulling away you pull your neighbours' charge point out of the ground | Yes | Yes |
| You hit a bollard while reversing into a space and the tailgate is dented | No | Yes |
| Your parked car is hit by someone who drives off without leaving a note | No | Yes |
| The charging cable is unplugged and taken while you are shopping at the rapid charger | No | Provided that |
| The battery's range has noticeably decreased after five years | No | No |
| You are stranded on the motorway with an empty battery and need a tow | No | No |
What the battery loses through use and what runs out on the road are not sudden events. The manufacturer's warranty and a breakdown assistance module exist for those.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Am I tied to the insurance the dealer signed up for me?
No. Once the first contract year has passed, you can cancel with virtually any company, observing the notice period in the conditions. Within that first year you are tied to the contract term. Do check whether there is a link to the finance: sometimes own-damage cover is required to remain in place as long as the credit runs.
What is not covered on such a policy?
Excluded as standard are damage through intent or recklessness, for which Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code is the basis, driving without a valid licence or during a driving ban, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Use for hire, driving lessons or carriage of persons for payment also falls outside the cover, as do wear and mechanical defects.
Do I have to declare that my child drives the car?
Yes, if he or she becomes the regular driver. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to declare everything relevant to underwriting on the application. If that is not done, the insurer may reduce the payment under Article 7:930 DCC, and refuse it entirely where there was an intention to mislead.
What happens to the policy if I trade the car in?
The insurance attaches to the registration number. On a trade-in you register the new vehicle and the premium is set again. The no-claims years built up move with you. If you trade in without replacing the car, the policy ends and you receive a no-claims statement. Always report the indemnity certificate as well, so that the cover does not run on longer than necessary.
