Insuring hybrid vehicles

A hybrid carries two drivetrains that can both break down, and the policy has to know which variant you drive: mild hybrid, full hybrid or plug-in.

In brief

The term hybrid covers three technically different vehicles. A mild hybrid has a starter-generator that supports the petrol engine and never drives on its own. A full hybrid drives short distances on electricity and charges only through the engine and braking. A plug-in charges from a socket and covers most daily journeys on electricity. For the premium and for assessing claims those are three different risks, and the type stated on your policy must match the registration document.

The claims profile differs from a fully electric car. You keep all the components of a petrol car (engine, exhaust, clutch or automatic gearbox, fuel system) and gain an electric motor, power electronics and a traction battery. In a collision the repairer therefore makes two diagnoses. That makes repairs more laborious and explains why insurers look more pointedly at the repair network on a hybrid than at the make.

If you charge from a socket, the same rules apply to the charging cable and the charging equipment as on a fully electric car. Those are set out at insuring electric vehicles. What comes in addition here is the petrol engine that runs little. Insurers do not pay for the consequences of standing idle or deferred maintenance. That remains your responsibility.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Mild, full or plug-in makes a difference on the policy

Insurers do not assess the three hybrid forms equally. A plug-in has a larger battery pack, more mass and a charging socket. A mild hybrid does not drive a metre on electricity. If your car is recorded on the policy as the wrong variant, the sum insured is wrong and the insurer can rely on Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeafter a claim. Check the description on the policy schedule against the registration details before you sign.

An engine that rarely warms up

Anyone who drives a plug-in almost entirely on electricity leaves the petrol engine cold. Fuel ages, condensation stays in place and a particulate filter never gets to regenerate. The damage that results is inherent defect and deferred maintenance, and that is excluded on every own-damage policy. Only sudden external damage is insured. Run the engine up to temperature regularly and keep the service book up to date. That is your only defence in an argument.

Putting in the wrong fuel does not automatically count as damage

A hybrid still has a filler cap, and misfuelling happens. Standard own-damage cover often does not pay for it: it is your own act, not an external event. Some insurers offer a module for it. The same applies to damage from continuing to drive with an empty traction battery or from charging through an unsound domestic installation. Ask in advance whether these situations are named in the conditions.

Two systems means two diagnoses

After a collision both the mechanical side and the high-voltage part have to be checked. That calls for a repairer with both qualifications and lengthens the time you are without a car. So check whether replacement transport is on your policy and for how many days. If you go outside the insurer's repair network, the payment is often limited to the rate that would apply within that network.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Hybrid form per the registration document. Mild hybrid, full hybrid and plug-in are rated separately. The variant must match the registration details.
  • Mass of the vehicle. The extra battery and electric motor make a hybrid heavier than the petrol version, which increases the collision damage to third parties.
  • System output. Insurers work with the combined output of both drivetrains, not with that of the petrol engine alone.
  • How repair-prone the drivetrain is. Two systems alongside each other make repairs more laborious. That works through into the own-damage premium.
  • Business or private use. Plug-ins are often driven as lease cars, with higher mileages and more drivers than with private use.
  • Excess chosen. A higher excess brings the premium down, but counts again on every separate diagnosis and repair.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to declare that my car is a plug-in?

Yes. The hybrid form determines the rating and the sum insured. If the policy schedule states a different version from the registration document, that is an incorrect declaration and the insurer can rely on the duty of disclosure after a claim. Check the description when taking out the policy and again if you change cars within the same policy.

Is damage to the traction battery insured?

Only if the battery forms part of the insured vehicle and the damage comes from outside, for instance through a collision or fire. Loss of capacity through use is wear and remains excluded. On a hybrid the pack is smaller than on a fully electric car, but replacement is still one of the most expensive repairs on the vehicle.

What if I have put in the wrong fuel?

Standard own-damage cover usually excludes this, because it is not an external event but your own act. A few insurers offer misfuelling as an additional module or include it in breakdown assistance cover. In any event do not start the engine and have the fuel system drained; driving on increases the damage and weakens your position with the insurer.

Is a hybrid cheaper to insure than an electric car?

That depends on the version and not on the drivetrain alone. Usually the lower vehicle value works in your favour, while the dual drive system makes repairs more laborious. Insurers weigh those factors differently. So have several companies set side by side rather than working from a rule of thumb per fuel type.
