Insuring a sports car

With a sports car it is not the value that decides but the power output: that determines whether an insurer accepts you, which security it requires and where cover stops.

In brief

Sports cars are assessed separately because three risks come together: high power, a high repair cost and attractiveness to thieves. Insurers therefore set underwriting requirements you will not meet on an ordinary car — a minimum age for the driver, a minimum number of no-claims years and a limited circle of people allowed to drive. If you do not meet them, it is not the premium that disappoints but the application that is declined.

The second requirement concerns security. For vehicles above a certain value or power class, the insurer asks for an approved alarm system and often for a tracking system, fitted by an approved installer. That is not a recommendation but a policy condition: if the system is missing or was not switched on, a theft claim can be declined while collision cover remains fully in place.

For limited-run versions or cars with an unusual history, a valuation is sensible. An ordinary market value assessment does not do them justice. If the car is mainly kept and rarely driven, look also at exclusive car insurance. If the vehicle is old enough for classic car conditions, different rules apply. Those are set out under insuring a classic car.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Power output determines acceptance

Above a certain power class, insurers apply additional requirements: a minimum age for the regular driver, a number of no-claims years built up and sometimes a circle of named drivers. If you let the car be driven by someone outside that circle, the damage at that moment is not covered. Record who may drive and stick to it, including for a short trip or a test drive with an interested buyer.

The circuit falls outside every standard policy

Taking part in competitions, speed trials and track days is excluded as standard, even at a private event where nobody is racing against the clock. That applies to own damage to your car and often to damage to third parties on the circuit site as well. To go on track you need separate one-day cover. A driver training course on a closed site is sometimes allowed; ask about that in writing in advance.

Every modification to the car must be reported

Chip tuning, a different exhaust, lowered suspension or non-standard wheels change the risk and sometimes the value. If those modifications have not been reported, the insurer can rely on Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code when you claim and adjust payment to what it would have done had the information been correct; where information is deliberately withheld, Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code even allows it to pay nothing. Report accessories you have had fitted yourself as well.

No working security means no theft cover

The policy normally names a class of alarm or tracking system and requires that it was fitted by an approved firm and is serviced annually. After a theft the insurer asks for the certificate and the subscription. If either is missing, or the system was switched off, the claim is declined. The same applies to handing in all the keys: one missing key is a recurring cause of dispute.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Power and acceleration. The most important factor. Above certain limits, additional underwriting requirements apply or an insurer declines the risk.
  • Valued or list-price-based value. For unusual versions, a valuation fixes the amount and prevents a disappointing market value in the event of a total loss.
  • Security level. An approved alarm and tracking system with a valid certificate is often a condition and works through into the premium.
  • Age and experience of the drivers. A recorded circle of drivers with a minimum age is assessed more favourably than an open circle.
  • Annual mileage. A car driven only in season carries a lower risk than a sports car used daily.
  • Storage. A locked garage on your own land weighs heavily, certainly for the theft part of the cover.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

May I take my sports car to a track day?

Not on the ordinary policy. Driving on a circuit falls under the exclusion for competitions and speed trials, even where no times are taken. Damage to your own car, and often to other participants as well, is then for your account. For circuit use there are separate day covers through specialist providers. Always ask in advance and in writing whether a specific event is allowed.

Do I need a valuation report?

For a common version usually not. For a limited run, an unusual history or a large amount of extra-cost options, yes. Without a valuation the insurer determines the market value itself in the event of a total loss, and that follows the ordinary market tables. A report fixes the amount in advance. Watch the period of validity and have the car revalued if its value has changed considerably.

Do I have to report chip tuning?

Yes. Every change to power or suspension alters the risk on which the premium is based. If you do not report it, the insurer can reduce payment when you claim or, where information was deliberately withheld, refuse it. That applies even where the modification had nothing to do with how the damage arose. Have the change noted on the policy schedule and keep the installer’s invoice.

Who may drive my car?

That depends on the driver clause on your policy. With sports cars the circle is often limited to named individuals or to drivers above a minimum age with sufficient no-claims years. If someone outside that circle drives, own damage is not covered and the insurer can recover the third-party payment from you. Check the clause before you lend out the key.
