Van insurance by make and version

Two vans of the same year of manufacture can differ widely in premium. The make says less about this than the specification, the weight and how often that type is stolen.

In brief

Insurers do not rate on brand name but on what lies behind that name: the list price, the weight and payload, the cost and delivery time of parts, and the claims and theft figures for that specific type. A compact city van, a medium-wheelbase van with a high roof and a chassis cab with a body are three different risks, even where they come from the same manufacturer. How the cover is built up in general is set out on the van insurance.

Within a single make, the trim level makes the difference. A double cab, a cooling unit, a tail lift, a closed body or a camper conversion changes the vehicle and sometimes the vehicle category as well. You must declare those modifications, together with what they cost. If you do not, a total loss is settled on the bare van. Report a conversion even where you carry it out yourself; Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires a complete picture of the vehicle as it is driven.

For a few categories there are separate products. An electric van brings the battery and charging with it: see the electric van insurance. For older vehicles, look at the youngtimer or the classic caroption, which works with an agreed value instead of market value.

Where the difference comes from

Four factors that determine, per make and model, what you pay and what you get back.

List price and repair costs

The own-damage premium follows the new price and the repair costs for the type. Vans with a lot of electronics, LED lighting, camera systems and driver assistance systems are more expensive to repair, even after light damage. In a collision with a bollard, a sensor in the bumper can double the cost of the claim; that is built into the rate for that model.

Types prone to theft and security requirements

For some models the theft and break-in figures are so high that insurers impose additional requirements: an approved alarm, an extra lock on the sliding door or parking on an enclosed site. If you do not comply with the security clause, that is a ground for refusing payment in the event of theft. Ask for those requirements before you buy the vehicle.

Bodywork, conversions and camper fit-outs

A chassis cab with a body, a refrigerated body or a van converted into a camper is, in insurance terms, something other than the standard specification. Sometimes a different product goes with it and the vehicle categorychanges. Declare the bodywork with the invoice; undeclared fitted equipment and bodywork are not insured, however visible they may be.

Imports and limited availability

With an imported vehicle the valuation can differ from the Dutch reference, and parts are sometimes hard to obtain. Insurers pay repair costs or market value, not the time you spend tracking down parts. Also, loss of value after repair and business interruption fall outside the cover, whatever the make.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type and version: height, length and cab shape are taken into account
  • List price: the basis for the own-damage premium
  • Weight and payload: heavier vehicles bring heavier claims with them
  • Security level: an alarm and extra locks may be compulsory
  • Year of manufacture: determines whether market value or an agreed value is used
  • Parking and region: theft figures differ widely by area

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why do I pay more than someone with the same van?

Make and model are only two of the variables. Year of manufacture, specification, annual mileage, where it is parked, region, the age of the drivers, no-claims years and the type of cover chosen together determine the rate. So never compare the premium alone; set the conditions, the excess and the fitted equipment declared alongside it.

I have converted a van into a camper.

Report it, because the vehicle has then in fact become something other than what the policy was taken out for. Depending on the fit-out and the registration, camper insurance rather than van insurance is what is needed. The fit-out is also only insured if its cost has been declared and appears on the policy schedule.

Is an imported vehicle assessed differently?

Yes. The value is determined by reference to comparable vehicles on the Dutch market, and that can differ from what you paid. Keep the purchase invoice, the import documents and any valuation. With rare versions, a valuation report is advisable, so that the value is not open to discussion when there is a claim.

Is loss in value paid after a collision?

As a rule, no. Own-damage cover pays for repair or, in the event of a total loss, the assessed value of the vehicle. That the van fetches less on sale after a repair is not an item the policy covers. Where the damage was caused by someone else, you can try to recover the loss in value from the party liable.
