Driving school car insurance
In a driving school car there is by definition an inexperienced driver behind the wheel. Ordinary insurers exclude that; a driving school policy assumes it.

In brief
A driving school car is a business asset with an exceptional risk profile: changing, inexperienced drivers, a lot of city mileage and daily use. Ordinary car insurance excludes giving driving lessons.
The policy takes account of the dual controls and of the fact that the instructor can intervene. Test drives and carrying learners to the test are also usually covered.
This page deals with one part. The overview of all parts is on the the main car insurance page.
What to look out for
Always declare the use for lessons
Giving driving lessons is excluded on ordinary car insurance. After a claim that means no cover and recovery of the other party's loss from you.
The instructor and their qualification
Insurers ask about instructors' WRM qualification. Keep it current and open to proof.
High mileages
A driving school car covers many times the mileage of a private car. Reckon on a premium based on mileage and a higher excess.
Replacement transport
If the driving school car stands idle, your turnover stands still. Check whether replacement transport or a loss-of-use arrangement is insured.
What determines the premium
- List price and type of car
- Annual mileage
- Number of instructors
- Area of deployment — city or region
- Claims history and excess
This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Frequently asked questions
Can a driving school car go on an ordinary policy?
No. Giving driving lessons is excluded on ordinary car insurance. Without a separate policy there is no cover after a claim.
Is the learner insured?
Yes, that is the heart of the policy: the learner drives under the supervision of a qualified instructor and is insured.
Are test drives covered?
Usually they are, including transport to and from the test. Check that expressly in the conditions.
Do I get replacement transport?
Only if it is insured. For a driving school that is often more important than a few euros' difference in premium.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| A learner runs into the back of a car that brakes suddenly | Yes | Yes |
| The damage to your own driving school car in that same collision | No | Yes |
| The driving school car is stolen overnight from outside the driving school | No | Yes |
| Injury to the instructor sitting beside the learner | No | Provided that |
| The driving school car is damaged during private use at the weekend | No | Provided that |
| The clutch is worn out because learners let it slip for months | No | No |
Under the supervision of a qualified instructor the learner counts as the driver; that is exactly how this policy differs from ordinary car insurance.
