In brief

Convertible insurance is ordinary car insurance, but the roof changes the risk. A soft top can be damaged without tools, can be cut open and offers no resistance to a break-in. An electrically or hydraulically operated roof is also a moving system with motors, sensors and a seal that starts to leak after some years. Third-party liability is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), but on this type of car the own-damage question is the most important.

The second feature is the pattern of use. Most convertibles are driven in spring and summer, stand in storage through the winter and are rarely the only car in the household. Limited mileage and locked storage count in underwriting, and sometimes suspending the registration for the winter period is an alternative.

When comparing, look specifically at how the roof coveris described: does it cover only the fabric, or also the mechanism, the rear window and the seal? That is where the difference between policies lies that the premium does not show.

What does convertible insurance cover?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

The basic cover required by law. Conceivable for an older convertible with a low market value, but you then bear roof and break-in damage yourself.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, also protection against theft, break-in, storm and glass damage: precisely the risks that most affect a convertible. For many convertibles the logical choice.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including where you are at fault and for damage to the roof caused by you. To be recommended for a new or valuable convertible, on a valued amount if you wish.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Burglary without signs of forced entry

On a closed car a break-in shows on a lock or a window. On a soft top the fabric is cut open or the roof simply opened, and then the traces many sets of conditions refer to are missing. Check whether your policy requires visible signs of forced entry and how that is applied to a convertible. Leave nothing in the car: theft of belongings from an open or thinly secured car is rarely paid and does count in your claims record.

The roof mechanism is not an own-damage claim

If the roof stops halfway, a hydraulic cylinder keeps leaking or an end-position sensor develops a fault, that is a mechanical defect and not an external event. Own-damage cover does not contribute to it. The same applies to fabric that discolours, shrinks or starts to leak at the seams: that is wear. Repairs to the system itself mount up because of the specialist work involved, which is a reason to check the roof's history when buying.

Weather, water and leaving the roof open

Hail on a taut fabric roof and storm that damages the roof usually fall under third-party, fire and theft. Rain that comes in because the roof was open does not: that is insufficient care and not a covered event. Water damage to the interior from a blocked drain channel in the roof well, a well-known point on older convertibles, also counts as deferred maintenance. Keep the channels clear and lock the car, including in a car park where you think you have the car in view.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: wear, discolouration and leaks in the fabric; defects in the roof mechanism without a collision or external event; and damage because the roof was open, including theft of belongings left behind. Scratches from a brush car wash, which is a real risk with a soft top, and damage through intent or gross fault under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code also fall outside it. Report a claim as soon as you reasonably can (Article 7:941 DCC).

Passenger accident insurance (SVI)

Motor passenger insurance (SVI) Pays the injury and material losses of the driver and passengers, whoever is at fault in an accident with your convertible.

Agency workers, interns & volunteers, traffic

Agency workers, interns & volunteers in traffic Legal help after a collision or in a dispute about damage or the purchase of your convertible, so that you are not on your own.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of roof. A fabric soft top is assessed differently from a folding steel hardtop.
  • Overnight storage. A locked garage considerably limits vandalism, slashing and hail damage.
  • Seasonal use and mileage. A car driven only in the summer half-year falls into a lower mileage band.
  • Second car or only car. If there is an everyday car alongside the convertible, the exposure changes.
  • Age and market value of the car. On an older convertible the market value has to be weighed against the cost of replacing the roof.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third-party liability, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive, and how the roof cover is described within it.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is damage to the soft top roof insured?

With a covered event it is: slashing during a break-in, vandalism, storm or hail usually fall under third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive. With third-party liability only there is no cover for the roof. Wear, discolouration and leaks at the seams fall outside it in every form. So have the description of the roof cover compared literally and not just the premium.

What if my convertible stands idle in winter?

That can be favourable. Declare the limited use and how it is stored; many insurers work with mileage bands. If you put the car away for a longer period, suspending the registration is an alternative: the insurance obligation under the WAM then lapses, but so does your cover against fire and theft. Discuss first what limited cover is sensible during storage.

May I take a soft top through a car wash?

In insurance terms it is not prohibited, but the damage it causes is usually not covered. Scratches, seams pulled loose and a rear window damaged by brushes do not count as an external event but as a consequence of the treatment you chose. Choose a brushless car wash or wash by hand, and check the seal around the windscreen afterwards.

I have a detachable hardtop. Is it insured?

As long as the hardtop is on the car it belongs to the vehicle. If it is in the garage or in storage, it is separate from the car and does not fall under the car policy. Theft or damage during storage may fall under home contents insurance, but only if the place of storage and the value are known there.
