Choosing the right car insurance

Choosing a policy works best in a fixed order: first the car, then the use, then who drives it. The premium follows from that of its own accord.

In brief

Step one is the car itself. Age and value determine whether own-damage cover still makes sense, and the way you have financed the car determines whether you are free to make that choice at all. With financial lease and private lease the other contracting party almost always requires full own-damage cover, sometimes with a prescribed maximum excess. With an imported or unusual car, a agreed value valuation is the only way to fix the value in advance; see the imported car.

Step two is the use. Commuting, business journeys, deliveries, hire through a car-sharing platform and use outside Europe are all different risks, and only what is on the policy schedule is insured. The territorial scope counts too: the countries for which liability cover applies are listed on the green card, and beyond those you need a separate arrangement. If you use the car partly for business while it is registered in your own name, look at insuring a private car for business use.

Step three is the drivers. The premium is calculated on the person who uses the car most often, and young or inexperienced drivers change the picture substantially. What that means is set out under the young driver. Only then do the extras come up: assistance, legal expenses cover for traffic claims and cover for injury to passengers. The overview of forms of cover is set out under which types of cover you can choose.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

What to look out for

Four questions that settle the choice before you look at premiums.

Is the cover free for you to choose?

With current finance, operating lease or personal lease, the contract dictates the cover. If you cancel own-damage cover while the contract requires it, you are in default towards the lender and, if the car is written off, you bear the remaining debt yourself. Check the insurance clause in the lease contract before you change the policy.

How will the value be established later?

Without an agreement, the market value at the time of the loss applies. A purchase price or replacement value as new arrangement only applies within an age limit stated in the conditions. For classics and rare versions, only a agreed value; see classic car insurance for the requirements that go with it.

What use have you not declared?

Excluded are, among others hire and paid passenger transport, use for driving lessons, taking part in competitions and training laps on a circuit, and driving outside the area named on the green card. A sharing platform through which you lend out your car counts as hire, even if that is not what you call it.

Which extras do you already have elsewhere?

Legal expenses cover for traffic matters is often already included in a family legal expenses insurance, and injury to passengers can overlap with personal accident cover. Go through your existing policies before you buy extra modules. Duplicate cover does not produce a double payment when you claim, only a double premium.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value, year of manufacture and version: determine repair costs and the basis of settlement
  • Method of financing: a lease or credit agreement often requires own-damage cover
  • Purpose of use: private, commuting, business or deliveries
  • Drivers on the policy: age and driving experience of the regular driver
  • Operating range: the Netherlands, Europe or beyond
  • Chosen additions: assistance, legal expenses, passengers

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

My car is on a lease contract. May I choose an insurer myself?

With financial lease, usually yes, provided the cover meets the requirements in the contract and the leasing company is noted as an interested party on the policy schedule. With operating and personal lease, the insurance is generally included in the monthly amount and you do not have that freedom. Read the insurance section of the contract; it also states the maximum excess allowed.

When is a valuation worthwhile?

With an imported car, a classic, a car with substantial modifications or a version for which no reliable market reference exists. A valuation report from a recognised valuer fixes the value in advance, so that there is no argument about market value when you claim. Note the period for which the report is valid; insurers apply a term after which a fresh valuation is needed.

Does commuting count as business use?

Usually not. Almost all private policies treat commuting as normal private use. Business use starts with journeys that are part of the work itself, such as visiting customers, carrying goods or making deliveries. If you are in doubt, simply declare it: the difference in premium is limited and the difference in cover when you claim is not.

What if I have a second car abroad?

A car with a foreign registration is in principle insured in the country of registration, because the insurance requirement follows the registration. A Dutch policy generally cannot be taken out for a vehicle that is not registered in the Netherlands. What is possible is set out under a car with a foreign registration.
