In brief

Imported car insurance is car insurance for a car imported from outside the Netherlands — from another EU country or from further afield, such as the United States or Japan. Before you can insure it, the car needs a Dutch registration number; for that the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) inspects the vehicle. After that, as with any car, at least compulsory third-party liability cover applies.

For an import the market value is often hard to determine, certainly with rare or unusual models. That is why insuring on a fixed valued amount is often sensible. Not every insurer accepts an imported car either. At Finass Verzekert we compare several insurers, including import specialists, so that you get the right cover at a fair premium.

Note the RDW registration and the registration number, the valuation for unusual models, and the availability and cost of parts — with imports those are often higher. A car with an originally foreign registration, for example right-hand drive (UK), also calls for an insurer that accepts this. We look for the provider that suits your import.

What does imported car insurance cover?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

The basic cover required by law. Suitable for a common import of limited value, where you take own-damage costs for your own account.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against theft, fire, storm and glass damage — on a valued amount if you wish. For many imports the middle way.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including damage you cause yourself, preferably on a fixed valued amount. Advisable for a valuable or rare imported car.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Valued amount for an import

Valued amount for an import Insure your imported car for a value agreed in advance. With rare or American and Japanese imports in particular, this prevents argument about the market value.

Breakdown assistance in the Netherlands & Europe

Breakdown assistance NL & Europe 24/7 help with breakdowns on the road, with towing, roadside repair and a replacement vehicle throughout Europe — useful with imports whose parts are less common.

Passenger accident insurance (SVI)

Occupants insurance (SVI) Pays for injury and damage to property suffered by the driver and passengers, regardless of who is at fault in an accident with your imported car.

Agency workers, interns & volunteers, traffic

Agency workers, trainees & volunteers traffic Legal assistance after a collision or in a dispute about damage or about the purchase and import of your car, so that you are not on your own.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Sum insured — the main basis for calculation
  • Cover and modules chosen
  • Risk profile and sector
  • Excess chosen
  • Claims history
  • Working area

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Can I insure an imported car in the Netherlands?

Yes. As soon as your imported car has a Dutch registration number, you can insure it. Not every insurer accepts an import, however, certainly not with unusual models or cars imported from outside the EU. We compare several insurers, including import specialists, and find a provider that will accept your car.

Do I need a Dutch registration number in order to insure it?

Yes. Before you can insure an imported car, the vehicle has to be inspected by the RDW and given a Dutch registration number. Only then can a Dutch insurer insure the car for the road. We help you as soon as the registration is settled.

Do I have to insure my imported car on a valued amount?

For common EU imports, insuring on market value can be enough. With rare, American or Japanese imports the market value is hard to determine and a fixed valued amount based on a valuation report is sensible. That way you know you will receive a correct amount in the event of damage or a total loss.

Do all insurers accept an imported car?

No. Some insurers are cautious about imports because of the valuation and the availability of parts. There are, however, insurers that focus specifically on imports. We know which insurers accept your type of import and on what conditions.

Is an imported car more expensive to insure?

It can be, particularly where parts are scarce or expensive or the car is rare. At the same time many imports insure perfectly well at a normal premium. By comparing, you find the insurer that assesses your import most favourably.

Can I insure a car with an originally foreign or right-hand-drive registration?

Yes, provided the car has a Dutch registration number. A car that was originally foreign or is right-hand drive (imported from the United Kingdom, for example) does call for an insurer that accepts this. We find that insurer for you.
