Insuring a lorry for private use

Most privately owned lorries do not run as lorries. They are motorhomes, horseboxes and show trucks, and that changes what needs to be insured.

In brief

As soon as you convert a truck, two values arise: the part that drives and what you have built into it. Insurers work as standard only with the first. A cab with a complete living unit, a horse compartment with a tack room or a show specification with chrome work and lighting can never be replaced on a market value basis. So have the value professionally assessed and have it recorded that the valuation is the starting point; Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code limits the payment to the actual loss, and a valuation report is the evidence of what that loss is.

The second point is the contents. Bedding, crockery, clothing, tools, tack, a television or an electric bike in the truck's garage do not fall under the motor cover. Some companies offer a limited contents module for living vehicles; otherwise you arrange that through separate cover. For a truck registered as a living vehicle, look at the motorhome insurance.

The third point is the pattern of use. A show truck is driven ten days a year and stands indoors the rest of the time. That is a favourable risk, provided you record it as such: seasonal cover, a low mileage limit and a storage clause produce a lower rate. For a truck older than forty years see insuring a classic lorry, for horse transport insuring a horsebox lorry.

What to look out for

Four situations in which things go wrong with these vehicles.

Damage caused by or to animals

If you carry horses, more than the truck is involved. You are liable as the keeper for damage your animal causes to someone else under Article 6:179 of the Dutch Civil Code, even where you did nothing wrong. Injury to the horse during transport is not an own-damage claim; separate animal cover exists for that. Damage to the floor or the walls from kicking often falls under the exclusion for damage caused by the property being carried.

Storage and security

With these vehicles, insurers almost always set requirements for storage: a locked shed or a fenced site with a gate. If the truck stands in an unguarded car park over the winter while the clause schedule says otherwise, theft or vandalism is not covered. Theft of batteries, catalytic converters and mirrors falls under this too.

Converting without reporting it

A change to the body, a heavier generator, a gas installation or an altered layout changes the risk. You must report it. Fire damage caused by a self-installed gas or electrical installation without inspection is refused on virtually every policy. Have installations inspected and keep the certificate.

Events, parades and demonstrations

Static display on a site is usually covered; taking part in speed or skill trials, pulling competitions and demonstrations is not. A run on a closed circuit also falls outside the cover. When taking part in an event, ask the organiser about the collective cover and report it to your insurer.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value including the conversion: the report determines the sum insured
  • Nature of use: living vehicle, horse transport or show truck
  • Number of days of use per year: seasonal use gives a lower rate
  • Storage location and security: often a condition of acceptance and not a discount factor
  • Year of manufacture and technical condition: counts in the choice between comprehensive and third-party, fire and theft cover
  • The driver's experience: years of holding the required licence

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to have my truck reclassified as a motorhome?

You do not have to, but it can be advantageous. If the fit-out meets the RDW's requirements, the vehicle can be registered as a motorhome, which affects the tax and sometimes the insurance options. If the registration remains a truck, you are still dependent on truck insurance. We work out both routes for you.

Is my valuation report valid indefinitely?

No, a valuation report has a limited period of validity, usually three years. If the report has expired at the time of the loss, you fall back on market value and lose exactly the advantage for which you had the valuation done. Put the expiry date in your diary and have interim conversions reassessed.

Can I insure the truck more cheaply in winter?

Yes, by suspending the registration at the RDW the insurance requirement under Article 2 of the WAM lapses for that period and you pay no road tax. The vehicle may then not be parked on the public road. Many companies allow limited cover against fire, theft and storm to continue during storage at a low rate; ask about this explicitly.

Who pays for recovery if I break down with the truck?

Only a policy with an assistance module. Recovering a heavy vehicle calls for specialist equipment and is considerably more expensive than towing a car. Check whether recovery after a breakdown, recovery after an accident and transport to a repairer are all three covered, and whether that also applies abroad.
