In brief

A business package is administratively one contract and legally a collection of separate policies. Under one cover sit sections such as buildings, business contents and goods, business interruption, glass, money, liability, legal expenses and cyber. Each section has its own sum insured, its own excess and its own clause sheet. When you claim, only the section covering the event is assessed.

The gain from bundling lies in overview and discount. The discount is usually tiered: the more sections, the higher the percentage. If you later cancel one, you drop back down the tiers and the premium on the remaining sections rises. That is why, when you review your cover, you should calculate per package rather than per section. Look at the en bloc clauseas well: it gives the insurer the right to change the premium and conditions for a whole group of policies mid-term.

Not everything fits in the package. Motor vehicles need their own policy; see van or fleet. Personal risks such as sickness absence, disability and accidents run through income protection cover. Building projects call for a Construction all risks (CAR) insurance, and mobile or static machinery for plant and machinery insurance. The general set-up of an SME package is set out on the hub page SME insurance package.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on SME insurance package.

Insurance that matches your sector

Every sector carries its own risks. We translate those into cover that genuinely fits what you do day to day, rather than a standard package that just happens to apply to your business too.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for in a package policy

Four points that only become apparent once there really is a claim.

One policy number, several descriptions of cover

The fact that everything is on one schedule does not mean the conditions are the same. Water from a burst pipe may be covered under the buildings section and at the same time restricted under the business contents section, for instance by a seepage exclusion. Read the clause sheet for each section. That is where the prevention requirements are set out, and they are the first thing checked when you claim.

Underinsurance affects every claim, however small

If the sum for business contents and goods is too low, payment is made proportionally. If your stock grows or you buy an extra machine, the sum has to rise with it. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code at the same time prevents you profiting from a loss; insuring for too much therefore brings no extra payment, only extra premium.

You must report changes in the risk

A move, a new activity, a second site or a period of vacancy changes the risk. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code obliges you to disclose and Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code allows the insurer to reduce or refuse payment where you have not. Also report a change of legal form, because the policyholder on the schedule then changes.

Three gaps a package does not fill

Pure financial loss belonging to a client stays outside the liability section and belongs on a professional indemnity insurance. Gradual soil and water pollution falls outside the ordinary sections and calls for environmental damage insurance. And administrative fines, penalty payments and additional tax assessments are not paid anywhere, any more than damage caused deliberately, under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of sections chosen: determines the tier of the package discount
  • Turnover and payroll: the basis on which the liability section is calculated
  • Sums insured per section: business contents, goods, business interruption and buildings separately
  • Construction type and use of the building: fire-hazardous processes carry a lot of weight
  • Level of prevention: burglary class, firefighting equipment and electrical inspection
  • Business interruption indemnity period: the period for which loss of turnover is paid

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I cancel one section mid-term?

Usually yes, at the contract renewal date or with the notice period set out in the conditions. Bear in mind that the package discount on the other sections may fall as a result, so the saving is smaller than the premium of the section you cancel. Ask in advance for a recalculation of the whole package rather than of the section alone.

Is a package cheaper than separate policies?

Often yes, thanks to the bundling discount and lower administration costs. It is not automatic: for a specific risk a specialist insurer can be sharper than the section in the package. We compare more than thirty companies objectively and set the package price against the total of the separate proposals, including the differences in conditions.

What does the en bloc clause mean for me?

It allows the insurer to adjust the premium or conditions of a whole group of policies mid-term, for instance after a series of claims in a particular sector. You will be notified and normally have the right to cancel the policy if you do not agree. Respond within the stated period, because silence counts as acceptance of the change.

Are staff included in the package?

Employers' liability for injury to employees forms part of the liability section, provided it is included. Continued payment of wages during sickness is separate and runs through sickness absence insurance. There is separate cover for injury to staff on the road. You can read about the difference at WEGAS and WEGAM. The duty of care itself follows from Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code.
