SME insurance through Allianz

In brief

Finass acts as intermediary for, among others, Allianz and works exclusively for no company. The comparison runs across several insurers. An SME package is not a product but a form of contract: separate sections on one policy schedule, with one renewal date, one direct debit and usually a discount that rises with the number of parts. The cover of each section remains that of the underlying policy. The package makes nothing wider.

The practical advantage shows in one event that affects several sections. If the business premises burn down, the building or the tenant's improvements, the business contents and stock, the clearance costs and the business interruptionall run at once. One file, one claims handler, but still a separate sum insured and a separate excess for each section. If everything runs at different companies, you have that discussion several times over.

Where it goes wrong is the assumption that a package is complete. Four covers are rarely included as standard: motor vehicles — those call for a policy of their own, see the fleet insurance —, cyber, professional indemnity for advisory work and the staff covers around sickness absence. See the cyber insurance, the professional indemnity insurance and the sickness absence insurance; the wider overview is at the SME insurance package.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on SME insurance package.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four features of the package form itself, apart from the individual covers.

Excesses stack up in one event

For a loss affecting three sections, an excess is in principle deducted for each section. Some conditions contain an overlap provision limiting that to the highest amount. Ask about it when the package is put together. It makes a difference at exactly the moment when your liquidity is already under pressure.

The en bloc clause

Virtually every business contract contains an en bloc clause: the insurer may change the premium or conditions for a whole portfolio during the term. You then receive a change you did not ask for, with a right to refuse it and end the insurance. Always read a letter like that; anyone who does not respond is taken to have agreed.

Changes are your responsibility

A second location, solar panels on the roof, storage of batteries, a move or staff joining the business: those are changes in risk. They fall under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code, with the consequences of Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code if they have not been reported. A package does not do that automatically. The policy does not move with your business.

What is covered in no section at all

Outside every SME package remain: damage caused intentionally under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, war risks and nuclear reactions, wear and tear, inherent defect and deferred maintenance, and administrative fines and penalty payments. Separate limits apply to flooding and earthquake, and for terrorism a national arrangement applies within which the payout is capped.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of sections chosen: determines the package discount on the whole
  • Sector and activities: the described capacity steers the underwriting of every section
  • Turnover and payroll: the bases that are adjusted afterwards
  • Construction type and use of the building: construction, installations and the storage that takes place in them
  • Excess per section: the most direct instrument for steering the premium
  • Claims history: assessed over the whole, not policy by policy

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does a package really have an advantage over separate policies?

On administration and discount, usually yes: one renewal date, one direct debit and one point of contact at a claim. On conditions, not automatically, because the best cover for each part is rarely with the same company. For straightforward risks the discount weighs more heavily; for an unusual risk a separate policy with better conditions may be worth more than the package benefit.

Can I end one section and keep the rest running?

You usually can, but it affects the discount on the remaining sections and sometimes the minimum composition of the package. Some contracts require a minimum number of parts. Ask in advance what dropping a section does to the total premium, so that you do not discover afterwards that the whole has become more expensive than before.

Is a cyber loss included under the business interruption section?

No. Business interruption cover pays for loss of turnover following covered material damage, such as fire or water damage. With encrypted systems or a service provider that has gone down there is no material damage and that section does not respond. Cyber insurance is needed for that, which covers the business standstill, the recovery and the liability after a data breach separately.

When should I have the package reviewed?

At every change that affects the risk, and otherwise at least once a year before the contract renewal date. Growth, a refurbishment, new activities or a change of legal form alter both the sums insured and the described capacity. We then go through the sections looking for underinsurance, overlap and cover that has become superfluous as your business has developed.
