BMW motorcycle insurance

A BMW GS or RT is valuable, popular with thieves and, because of the protruding boxer cylinders and electronics, expensive to repair after a fall.

In brief

In the Netherlands, BMW Motorrad is best known for the GS family: the R 1250 GS and, since late 2023, the R 1300 GS, the Adventure variants and the lighter F 800 GS and F 900 GS. Many touring riders also ride an R 1250 RT or K 1600, and sporty riders an S 1000 R or S 1000 RR. New prices for the large models are often well above twenty thousand euros, and used examples also hold their value well. That makes the premium for limited comprehensive and comprehensive cover relatively high.

Repairs after a fall are often costly on a BMW. On the boxer models the cylinders protrude on both sides, so the valve covers are easily hit when the bike tips over. Modern models also have a lot of electronics: cornering ABS, riding modes, adaptive lighting and, on newer GS and RT models, radar-controlled cruise control with sensors front and rear. After damage, those sensors must be checked or calibrated.

Many BMWs have Keyless Ride, which lets you start the motorcycle with a key fob in your pocket. Insurers therefore sometimes ask about additional security. For your BMW, we compare which insurer offers the best conditions for value, accessories and theft.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your motorcycle insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What does BMW motorcycle insurance cover?

Which cover suits your BMW depends on the model, its age and whether you have a lot of accessories such as panniers and crash bars.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

Only worthwhile for an older BMW with a low market value, as your own motorcycle and accessories are not covered.

  • Damage to others
  • No cover for theft
  • Suits an old R or K series
Third-party liability plus

Third-party, fire and theft

Protects your BMW against theft and external damage, important for a sought-after model such as the GS.

  • Theft, including panniers and parts
  • Fire, storm and hail
  • Lock or alarm requirements
Comprehensive cover

Comprehensive

Also pays for your own damage after a fall or tip-over, which quickly adds up with protruding cylinders and costly electronics.

  • Valve covers and cylinder protection
  • Calibration of radar sensors
  • New-for-old value in the first years

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price including factory options. The options list counts in the basis. A version with packages weighs more heavily than the base model.
  • Engine capacity and power. Heavy touring and travel models fall into a higher class than a middleweight of the same value.
  • Annual mileage. Touring riders cover more kilometres per season than average. That is a separate band.
  • Area of cover. If you make regular trips outside the standard green card countries, that is assessed separately.
  • Storage and security. A locked garage, an approved lock or a tracker mainly affect the theft element.
  • Age and no-claims years. Demonstrable no-claims years from Roy-data reduce the premium. An entry step costs more.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Situations that occur specifically with BMW motorcycles.

Tipping over with a fully loaded GS

A fully loaded R 1300 GS Adventure with panniers and a full tank weighs well over 270 kilograms. While turning on an unpaved track, the motorcycle falls over. The valve cover, a pannier and the hand guard are damaged. Only comprehensive cover (allrisk) pays for this own damage. Genuine BMW crash bars limit the damage but, given their high value, exceed the standard accessories limit of many policies. So declare them separately.

Keyless Ride and theft

With Keyless Ride, the motorcycle unlocks and starts as soon as the key fob is within range. If the key is kept at home right by the front door and the motorcycle is parked outside, there is in theory a risk of relay attacks, as with cars. So keep the key away from the motorcycle or in a shielding pouch. For higher values, an insurer may require a certified alarm or tracking system. BMW offers a factory-fitted alarm system.

Radar sensors after a minor fall

Newer GS and RT models can be fitted with adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning, which use radar sensors front and rear. If you hit the front or the rear light in a fall, the system must be checked by the dealer and calibrated if necessary. That increases the cost of the claim, even if the visible damage seems limited. Under comprehensive cover this is usually included, but check the excess.

Accessories and BMW panniers

Aluminium panniers, a top box, extra lighting, a navigation system and a comfort seat can together cost thousands of euros on a BMW. Many insurers cover accessories up to a fixed amount. If the motorcycle or just the panniers are stolen, the insurer will then pay no more than that limit. Make a list with invoices and ask whether the accessories can be insured at their actual value.

Frequently asked questions

Questions BMW riders ask us about their motorcycle insurance.

Is a BMW GS more expensive to insure than other motorcycles?

Often yes for limited comprehensive and comprehensive cover, because the new price is high, the motorcycle holds its value well and repairs after a fall are expensive. Its popularity with thieves also plays a part. The third-party liability (WA) premium depends more on your age, where you live and your no-claims years (schadevrije jaren). Each insurer sets the difference from other brands itself; we request quotes for your specific model.

Do I need to tell the insurer about my BMW alarm?

Yes, always report an alarm or tracking system. With some insurers a certified system earns a discount; with others it is even a condition for theft cover above a certain value. BMW's factory-fitted alarm is not automatically recognised by every insurer. Ask which certification is required and keep the proof.

Is BMW breakdown assistance part of my motorcycle insurance?

BMW Motorrad often provides its own mobility service with new motorcycles for a certain period. That is separate from your insurance. Once that service expires, or if you ride an older BMW, you can arrange breakdown assistance through your insurance or a breakdown organisation. Check whether the cover applies throughout Europe, as many GS riders make long trips.

How long does a new-for-old arrangement apply to my BMW?

That varies by insurer. Some pay the new value in the event of a total loss or theft in the first year, others for up to two or three years, often with monthly depreciation after the first year. For a BMW that holds its value well, the market value can still be high after a few years. Compare the arrangements, because the difference can run into thousands of euros.
