In brief

Sports, enduro and supermoto models are used differently from a tourer, and the policy risk shifts with that from collision to a fall with no other party involved. That type of damage is only in comprehensive cover. Under third-party liability or third-party, fire and theft you pay for the fairing panels, the suspension components and the handlebar assembly yourself.

The second dividing line is off-road. A track day, an enduro route over unpaved ground or an instruction day on a closed circuit falls outside the standard cover, even if you have a registration. If you ride without a registration on a motocross site, the duty to insure under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) does not apply, but your liability under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code continues to exist as normal.

Also excluded are competitions and speed trials, damage during hire or instruction, and damage arising while the machine is tuned up. See also the how motorcycle insurance is structured.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Power in relation to weight. A light machine with a lot of power falls into a heavier class than the list price suggests.
  • Type of version. Sports, supermoto, enduro or naked. The pattern of loss and the parts prices differ per type.
  • Age and driving experience. Young riders on a sports version are a separate category in the underwriting.
  • Purpose of use. Recreational, commuting or regular trips to events. The purpose stated counts.
  • Storage and security. Sports models are light and easy to lift; insurers therefore often set extra requirements.
  • Excess on single-vehicle damage. For a fall with no other party involved a higher excess often applies than for a collision.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Circuit, track day and off-road fall outside the policy

Virtually every motorcycle policy excludes use off the public road. That affects not only competitions but also a free track day, rider training on a closed circuit and a run over an off-road course. The exclusion works both ways: damage to your own machine is not paid for and neither is damage you cause to someone else there. Separate one-day coverexists for such days; arrange it in advance.

A motocross machine without a registration leaves a gap

Without a registration and without use on the public road, the duty to insure under the WAM does not apply. Your liability does not disappear with it: if you hit another rider or a spectator on the site, Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies. Personal liability insurance almost always excludes damage involving motor vehicles, so nothing is arranged then. Ask about separate off-road or club cover.

A fall with no other party involved: high parts prices, low market value

In a slide, fairing panels, hand guards, brake caliper, radiator and often a suspension unit all break at once. On a sports machine those parts together cost a considerable part of the market value, certainly on an example a few years old. The claim then quickly exceeds the total loss threshold. Under third-party, fire and theft a fall with no other party involved is not covered at all. Only comprehensive deals with this.

Transport on a trailer and power gained through modification

If you take the machine to the site on a trailer, damage during that transport does not fall under the motorcycle policy but under the trailer insurance, and even there the load counts as excluded. Also, every change to power output, mapping or exhaust is a change of risk that you must report under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Damage while using a tuned-up machine is excluded.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a track day included?

No. Riding on a circuit falls under the exclusion for use off the public road, even where it is not a competition and no times are taken. Both your own damage and damage to other participants then remain uninsured. Separate one-day covers exist for such days; take one out before you enter, not afterwards.

Do I have to insure my motocross machine if it never goes on the road?

Not by law, because the duty to insure under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) attaches to use on the road. Your liability does continue to exist through Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code, however, and personal liability insurance excludes damage involving motor vehicles. If you cause injury on the site, you bear that yourself. So ask about separate off-road or club cover.

Is damage after a fall with no other party involved covered?

Only with comprehensive cover. Third-party liability covers only what you do to someone else, and third-party, fire and theft has only named causes such as fire, storm and theft. A slide on a bend falls under neither. Weigh that against the market value of the machine, because on an older example the premium for comprehensive rises quickly.

What if the machine has been tuned up?

You must report every change to power output, mapping, exhaust or gearing under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you do not, the insurer may rely on Article 7:930 DCC when a claim is made and reduce or refuse payment. That applies even where the modification demonstrably had nothing to do with how the accident arose.
