Office and shop electronics insurance through Allianz
In a shop, electronics are not support but the till itself. If the card payment system fails or the freezer thaws, sales stop while the door stands open.

In brief
Finass acts as intermediary for the business range of Allianz and compares it objectively with more than thirty other companies; which company it ends up being follows from what cover you need. For retail and hospitality the equipment is recognisable: till systems, card terminals, scales, refrigeration and freezing installations, camera surveillance, electronic article surveillance and screens in the window display. All that equipment sits in a publicly accessible place and is therefore more prone to damage, spillage and vandalism than equipment on an office floor.
Two risks are typical of this sector. The first is spoilage of stock after refrigeration fails. That is damage not to the equipment but to the goods, and it is only paid where a separate section has been included for it, often with a requirement for a temperature alarm. The second is damage caused by a break-in or ram raid: alongside the stolen till, the shop front, the security gate and the cabling go too. Anyone wanting that on one policy has to arrange the join with the business contents insurance for shops deliberately.
Also consider the paymentsside. A faulty card terminal does not amount to damage to property as long as the device belongs to the bank, but it does mean lost turnover. That does not fall under this policy. For that an additional costs section or business interruption insurance for retail is needed. For disruption caused by an attack on your till software in the cloud, the cyber insurance the appropriate policy.

What to look out for
Four points that are more often decisive in a shop or office than the sum insured.
What is structurally outside the cover
Excluded are, among others spoilage of stock for as long as that section is not separately included; equipment owned by a third party, such as the bank's card terminal or a supplier's refrigeration unit; and damage caused by wear, contamination and overdue maintenance, including blocked filters and condensers. Theft by your own staff is also generally excluded or tied to a separate section.
Break-ins, ram raids and repairing the shop front
The electronics policy pays for the equipment. The shop front, the roller shutters and the brickwork fall under the buildings or tenant's improvements cover. If you rent the shop, check whether tenant's improvements (huurdersbelang) are included for the fittings you installed. Without that section you repair the cabling, connection points and security installation you fitted at your own expense.
The public in the space changes the risk
A customer knocking over a screen, drink spilled in a till drawer or vandalism to a self-scan till are typical all risks events and are precisely why this cover exists. If you can identify the person responsible, the insurer can recover the loss under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. So always note the name and the circumstances and keep the camera footage.
Security requirements are not optional advice
If the policy or a clause states that the alarm is connected to a monitoring centre, that roller shutters are down at night or that the till is emptied, those are warranty conditions. If they are not met at the time of a burglary, the payout may lapse, even where the failure had nothing to do with the size of the loss.
What does your premium depend on?
- Replacement value of the equipment: till systems, refrigeration, cameras and screens together
- Sector and opening hours: evening trading and hospitality carry a different risk
- Security level of the premises: alarm class, roller shutters and connection to a monitoring centre
- Presence of refrigeration and freezing installations: and whether spoilage of stock is included
- Location of the premises: shopping street, shopping centre or standalone site
- Excess per event: often set separately for burglary and vandalism
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Tills disappear in a burglary with clear signs of forced entry | Yes | Yes |
| A power surge after a lightning strike takes out the network equipment | Yes | Yes |
| The scales fall while the counter is being cleaned | No | Yes |
| A short circuit in the power supply of your camera surveillance | No | Yes |
| Retrieving your till and stock data after the disk has failed | No | Provided that |
| Your till software is down because of an attack on the supplier's server | No | No |
The bottom rows point to cyber or business interruption cover. Those sit alongside this policy, not within it.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
My freezer failed and the stock has spoiled. Is that paid?
Only if the section for spoilage of refrigerated goods is included and the cause is a covered defect in the installation. Where the power supply fails through the network operator, a separate provision or a waiting period in hours often applies. Insurers also regularly require a temperature alarm or temperature logging, so that it can be established afterwards when the temperature rose.
The card terminal is broken and I cannot take payments. What does the policy cover?
If the device belongs to the bank or to a payment service provider, damage to that device is not your loss and is not insured on your policy. What you can insure are the additional costs of carrying on and, where a longer outage affects turnover, the fall in profit through business interruption cover.
A customer pushed a monitor off the counter. Who pays?
You report it to your own electronics insurance, which pays the loss in principle because it is a sudden event from outside. The insurer can then try to recover the costs from the person responsible or his liability insurer. Report it in good time, because Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report a loss as soon as you become aware of it.
Is this cover not already in my business contents insurance?
Business contents insurance works with named perils such as fire, storm, water and burglary. Dropping, spillage, an internal defect or vandalism to a device usually fall outside it. Those are precisely the most common causes in a shop, and this separate all risks cover exists for them. Which set-up works out cheaper depends on the size and age of your stock of equipment.
