Electronics insurance through De Goudse
A fire policy covers fire, storm and burglary. Electronics insurance covers precisely the damage equipment does to itself or that arises through clumsiness.

In brief
Finass acts as intermediary for the business range of De Goudse and compares it objectively with more than thirty other companies. The difference from ordinary business contents cover is one of principle: a business contents insurance works with named perils: fire, storm, water, burglary: while electronics insurance is all risks cover. That insures precisely the causes that occur most often with equipment: an internal short circuit, a blown circuit board, a knocked-over cup, a device falling off a trolley.
The part that costs the most money is not the box but the contents. After a breakdown the software has to be installed again and files have to be restored. Those hours are only within the cover if the section for reconstruction of data and software is included, and then only for restoring existing back-ups. Re-entering data that was never backed up is not paid for. For loss caused by a hack or ransomware, a cyber insurance the appropriate policy.
When applying, note the requirement of a maintenance contract. For more expensive equipment — medical devices, measurement and control equipment, large printing systems: insurers often make it a condition that a maintenance agreement with the supplier is in place and that the prescribed maintenance has demonstrably been carried out. If that contract ends, say so; changes not notified may, under Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code affect the payout.

What to look out for
Four subjects that lead to discussion with electronics more often than the sum insured.
What is structurally outside the cover
Excluded are, among others wear, corrosion and gradual deterioration; damage the supplier has to put right under a guarantee or the maintenance contract; and defects in parts that by their nature are replaced regularly, such as lamps, filters, batteries and toners. Cosmetic damage without any effect on operation is usually excluded as well.
Replacement value as new does not apply without limit
Most policies settle equipment up to a certain age on the basis of replacement value as new and after that on market value. With a device eight years old that can be a large difference. Ask what age limit applies and whether it differs by type of equipment. For computers the limit is often lower than for fixed machinery.
Inside the premises, or outside as well
As standard the cover applies at the address stated on the policy schedule. Laptops, tablets and measuring equipment that travel to customers are not automatically included. If you want those insured, a separate section for mobile equipment is needed, usually with its own limit and with conditions about how the equipment is left.
Hire, lease and third-party equipment
If you hold leased or hired equipment, you are contractually responsible for it while you are not the owner. Such items fall under the care, custody and control exclusion in liability insurance and therefore have to be expressly included on the electronics policy, stating the interest you are insuring.
What does your premium depend on?
- Replacement value of the equipment: the sum declared is the basis
- Type of equipment: medical and measuring equipment weigh more heavily than office PCs
- Age of the equipment: determines the chance of an inherent defect
- Maintenance contract: a current contract usually lowers the premium
- Area of cover: on site only or outside the business premises as well
- Excess per event: a higher excess keeps small claims out
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Fire, smoke and water damage in the home | Yes | Yes |
| Theft after forced entry | Yes | Yes |
| Knocks and falls at home | No | Yes |
| Loss or theft away from home | Provided that | Provided that |
| Damage during transport, repair or exhibition | Provided that | Provided that |
| Wear, shrinkage, damp and insect damage | No | No |
A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
My device failed without any identifiable cause. Is that covered?
An internal defect without any outside influence is called an inherent defect and is covered in principle on electronics insurance, unlike on a fire policy. The insurer will have it established whether wear is involved or a manufacturing fault covered by a guarantee. In both cases there is no payment, because someone else has to answer for it.
Does the policy pay the turnover I lose while repairs are carried out?
Not automatically. The electronics policy pays for repair or replacement of the device. For the costs you incur to keep going, such as hiring replacement equipment or overtime, an additional costs section is needed. For a longer fall in profit, business interruption insurance is the right product.
What if a member of staff drops a device?
Operating errors and clumsiness by your own staff are exactly the typical all risks exposure and are included. The position is different with intent or wilful recklessness: Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code excludes loss caused by the insured intentionally or through recklessness. Report the loss in good time, because Article 7:941 DCC requires you to do so as soon as you know of it.
Do I need this alongside business contents insurance?
That depends on your stock of equipment. At an office with standard computers, business contents cover with an extension is often enough. As soon as you have equipment that is expensive, vulnerable or business-critical, separate electronics cover is more economical, because the most common causes are covered under it and not under the business contents policy.
