Computer and electronics insurance through Nationale-Nederlanden
With servers and network equipment the replacement value is rarely the problem. The loss lies in the days when nothing can be processed, delivered or invoiced.

In brief
Finass acts as intermediary for the business range of Nationale-Nederlanden and compares it objectively with more than thirty other companies. Computer and electronics insurance is all risks cover on the equipment itself: servers, switches, routers, storage systems, peripherals and the associated cabling. What is insured is not only fire or burglary, but also an internal defect, a fault in the power supply and damage caused by operation. The general structure of this product group is set out on the hub page.
Two causes occur more often than average in server rooms. The first is over-voltage or under-voltage after a lightning strike nearby or after a fault in the electricity network; the second is failure of the climate control, after which equipment overheats. Check whether both causes are named and whether requirements apply on surge protection and temperature monitoring. Where such requirements appear in the policy, they are warranties: not meeting them costs you cover.
The section most often missing is the one for additional costs. That pays what you spend to keep going after the loss: hiring replacement capacity, moving temporarily to an external environment, overtime and express delivery. If the setback runs on longer and hits your profit, that is the domain of the business interruption insurance. Downtime caused by an attack or ransomware belongs not here but on the cyber insurance.

What to look out for
Four subjects that with IT equipment make the difference between a smooth settlement and a discussion.
What is structurally outside the cover
Excluded are, among others errors in software, configuration and programming without physical damage; interruptions in the supply of electricity or data transport outside your premises, unless expressly included; and repairs the supplier has to carry out under a guarantee or service contract. Gradual ageing and wear of components are excluded as well.
The boundary with cyber insurance
In essence this policy requires a physical cause. A server encrypted after a ransomware attack is not technically damaged, only inaccessible. Without cyber cover there is then no payment for the investigation, the recovery and the notifications. Set the two policies side by side and make sure there is no gap between what one sees as hardware damage and the other as an incident.
Reconstruction of data has its own limit
Restoring software and files falls under a separate section with its own amount. It is almost always a condition that a working back-up exists that is kept away from the affected equipment. Test that restore procedure periodically. A back-up that has never been tried is worth little when a loss occurs.
Report changes in the set-up
If you move equipment to an external data centre, or more equipment comes to your own site, let us know. The address and the set-up appear on the policy schedule. Changes not notified may, under Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code, lead to a reduced payout, because the risk insured then differs from the actual risk.
What does your premium depend on?
- Replacement value of the equipment: including cabling and peripherals
- Set-up: your own server room, meter cupboard or an external data centre
- Surge protection: and whether there is an emergency power supply
- Climate control and monitoring: cooling, temperature alarm and access control
- Additional costs included: limit and indemnity period
- Excess per event: often higher for equipment in a business-critical set-up
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| A sprinkler goes off above the patch cabinet and floods the switches | Yes | Yes |
| During a burglary at the office two laptops disappear from a desk drawer | Yes | Yes |
| An engineer drops a server out of the rack while sliding it in | No | Yes |
| The power supply of a storage system burns out internally with no identifiable external cause | No | Yes |
| A laptop is stolen from a locked car during a customer visit | No | Provided that |
| Equipment is damaged during the move to your new premises | No | Provided that |
The difference lies above all in the causes nobody from outside can point to: inherent defects and clumsiness are covered only under the all risks form.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
My switch burned out after a lightning strike further away. Is that covered?
Induction damage from a lightning strike in the vicinity is one of the core causes covered by this insurance and is generally paid. The policy may, however, require surge protection to be fitted. If it is absent while the conditions or clauses prescribe it, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout.
The cooling failed and the servers were ruined. Does the policy pay?
Overheating after failure of the climate control installation is included if that cause is not excluded and the result is physical damage to the equipment. Insurers then ask about maintenance of the cooling installation and about the presence of a temperature alarm. Without evidence of maintenance, the discussion about neglect starts quickly.
Do I get equivalent equipment or the old type back?
Where equipment is no longer available, it is repaired or replaced with a technically equivalent alternative. You do not get a better configuration than you had: Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prevents the payment putting you in a clearly better position than you would have been in without the loss. Any extra cost for a more powerful machine is for your own account.
What do I have to do to report the loss properly?
Report as soon as you know of the defect, leave the equipment as it is and have no irreversible work done before the loss adjuster has been able to assess it. Under Article 7:941 DCC you have to report as soon as you know of the defect and cooperate with the investigation. Keep log files, fault reports and the invoice for the defective component; together they form the substantiation of the claim.
