The hill · a competitive sport · excluded

Ski jumping and your insurance

Ski jumping means jumping from a purpose-built hill in a club setting: an in-run, a take-off and a flight of tens of metres. On an ordinary travel or accident policy that is almost always excluded.

In brief

Ski jumping is practised almost exclusively at a jumping club, on a certified hill and under supervision. That very structure makes it for insurers a competitive sport: taking part in competitions and the training for them appears in the standard exclusions, together with jumps from a hill as a separate category.

In reality, therefore, cover does not run through your travel insurance but through the club or the sports federation, which often has collective accident cover. Ask them exactly what it covers: it deals with permanent disability and death, not with treatment costs abroad or with your liability.

What is covered with ski jumping?

Look not only at your own policy, but also at the cover held by the club and the federation.

Your own policy

Travel and accident cover

Jumps from a hill are among the fixed exclusions.

  • Competition and training excluded
  • A surcharge rarely possible
  • Ask in writing in advance
Club

Collective federation cover

Jumping clubs generally have their own accident insurance.

  • Only during activities
  • Limited sums insured
  • Membership must be current
Travel

Travelling to a training camp or competition

The trip itself is usually covered as normal.

  • Travel and accommodation normal
  • The jumping itself not
  • Luggage included

Travel and accommodation around a training campYesYes

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine who pays after a fall on the hill.

Competitive sport is a hard exclusion, training included

Travel and personal accident policies generally exclude off-piste mountain sports, air sports, diving below a stated depth and taking part in competitions. With ski jumping the training for a competition counts as well, and many sets of conditions also name jumps from a hill separately. A surcharge is rarely a solution here.

Non-disclosure costs you more than one policy

If you do not mention the sport when taking out accident, disability or term life insurance, you breach the duty of disclosure of Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and the insurer can limit or refuse the payment (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Report an injury within the period set by Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the sport: ski jumping is at the top
  • Competition or training only: both often excluded
  • Size of the hill: a practice hill or a large hill
  • Age and level: youth or squad
  • Federation cover: what the club already arranges
  • Sums insured: especially for disability

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I add ski jumping to my travel policy?

Rarely. Most insurers do not accept jumping from a hill, not even for a surcharge. Always ask in writing. The odd provider of adventure cover makes an exception for a small practice hill.

Am I insured through my club?

There is often collective accident cover through the federation, valid during training and competitions. It generally covers disability and death, not your treatment costs abroad or your liability.

Does the exclusion apply to a one-off clinic as well?

Usually yes. The exclusion looks at the activity, not at how often you do it. Even a single supervised jump comes under the provision on hill jumping or competitive sport.

Is my trip to a competition covered?

Yes. Travel, accommodation, luggage and ordinary medical costs remain insured as normal. Only the consequences of the jumping itself fall outside the cover, even if you travel there as a competitor.

Do you jump off the ramp?

Have it established before the season what the club, the federation and your own policy cover between them. We set it out side by side.
