In brief

In ice climbing you go up frozen ice with ice axes and crampons, on a rope and protected with ice screws. Insurers place that under mountain sports, together with rock climbing and alpinism. That means that on travel, accident and liability cover it usually appears in the exclusions states.

That exclusion is wider than people expect. A guided introduction day, a top-rope session in an ice climbing park and a course led by a mountain guide are normally caught by it as well. What counts is the technique, not the difficulty of the route. Declare the sport before you leave if you want cover.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What is covered with ice climbing?

Three things determine your position: the declaration, the supervision and the equipment.

In advance

Notify it and have it accepted

What you do not declare is not covered.

  • Notify us before you leave
  • Surcharge or separate module
  • Also for a single climbing day
On site

Guide, course or independent

Acceptance often depends on supervision and experience.

  • A recognised mountain guide or school
  • Top-roping sometimes judged more mildly
  • Leading counts for more
Equipment

Axes, screws and rope

Equipment has its own restrictions in the policy.

  • Damage in use not covered
  • Hired equipment in your care
  • The deposit is your excess

What is covered

SituationStandardWith extension
A guided introduction day in an ice climbing parkNoYes
Top-rope climbing led by a mountain guideNoYes
Leading with your own ice screwsNoProvided that
Medical expenses after a fall on the ropeNoYes
Damage to hired axes and cramponsNoProvided that

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the sport: mountain sport is high up
  • Top-roping or leading: leading counts for more
  • Supervision and experience: a guide or your own roped team
  • Purpose and amount: an ice park or high mountains
  • Duration of the trip: a single day or a whole week
  • Sums insured: rescue and disability

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine whether your policy pays after a climbing accident.

Mountain sport is a standard exclusion

On most travel and accident policies, four kinds of sport appear in the exclusions: mountain sports off the beaten track, air sports, deep diving and speed contests. Climbing with rope, axes and crampons falls under the first category. A course or a guide makes the sport safer, but does not automatically lift the policy exclusion.

Mountaineering and rock climbing

Borrowed and hired equipment falls outside your liability

If you damage the climbing school's axes, rope or crampons, the care, custody and control exclusion on the liability insurance applies: damage to items in your care is not covered. The hirer sets it off against the deposit. Report damage and injury immediately (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does the exclusion also apply to a guided course?

Usually yes. The policy looks at the technique, not at the grade of the route. Climbing on a rope with axes and crampons is mountain sport, including on an introduction day in an ice climbing park with a recognised guide alongside.

How do I get ice climbing included?

By declaring it before departure and asking for additional cover for mountain sports. Insurers that accept this often set requirements about supervision and equipment. Have the acceptance confirmed in writing before you go.

Does the climbing school's insurance cover me?

As a rule it covers only the school's own liability, and only where mistakes can be shown. Your own injury, the recovery costs and repatriation are not included. Arrange your own cover separately.

What if I fall and have to be rescued?

Call your insurer's emergency assistance centre first, so that they arrange the guarantee of payment. If the sport is excluded, the costs of rescue, treatment and transport are entirely at your own expense.

Going ice climbing?

Have it recorded before departure whether mountain sports are included. We find out which insurer accepts that.
