In brief

In paragliding you hang beneath a canopy that you steer yourself, launching on foot from a slope. Insurers count that as air sports: the same category as parachute jumping and gliding, and on most policies excluded unless declared and accepted in advance.

There is something else at play here that does not arise with mountain sports. A paraglider is legally an aircraft, and many liability policies exclude damage caused with an aircraft. If you land on someone's roof, crop or car, your AVP may not be the right policy for it.

Within the sport the risks vary widely. A tandem flight with a professional pilot is assessed differently from solo thermal flying, cross-country flights or acrobatic flying. Always ask for written confirmation of what is included.

What is covered with paragliding?

Three strands: your own injury, damage to others and the recovery after an emergency landing.

Injury

Medical expenses

Only after the sport has been declared and accepted.

  • Notify us before you leave
  • Even for a single flight
  • Call the emergency assistance centre in the event of injury
Liability

Damage on launch or landing

Mind the aircraft exclusion in your AVP.

  • Assessment under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code
  • An AVP often excludes aircraft
  • Club cover sometimes adds to this
After a landing

Recovery in the mountains

An emergency landing in impassable terrain takes resources.

  • Costs of mitigating the loss are a separate section
  • Arrange a guarantee in advance
  • Keep the report and invoices

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that go wrong more often with canopy flying than with other sports.

Air sports sit alongside mountain sports and competitions in the exclusions

Travel and personal accident policies generally exclude air sports, mountain sports off the beaten track, diving below your certified depth and speed contests . Paragliding always touches the first category, and with a launch high in the mountains the second as well. Even a single tandem flight comes under it.

Your liability insurance often does not cover aircraft

If you cause damage on launch or landing, that is assessed under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Most AVPs, however, exclude damage caused with an aircraft , just as they exclude damage with a motor vehicle or a vessel. Without separate cover or club insurance you are then on your own.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the sport — air sports are in the highest
  • Tandem or solo — acceptance varies widely
  • Licence and flying hours — training through a recognised school
  • Destination — the Alps, coastal hills or further afield
  • Sums insured — mainly for disability and recovery costs
  • Recreational or in competition — competitions are almost always excluded

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does paragliding come under ordinary travel insurance?

Usually not. Air sport is a standard exclusion. You have to declare it before departure, and even then not every insurer accepts the sport. Always ask for written confirmation before you fly.

Is a tandem flight covered?

Sometimes. A number of insurers make an exception for a single tandem flight with a professional pilot. Flying solo, thermal flights and acro almost always remain outside the cover.

Who pays for damage to a roof or a car on landing?

Not your liability insurance as a matter of course: it usually excludes damage caused with an aircraft. Check whether your flying club or school has liability cover for members and whether it applies to you as well.

Are recovery costs included?

Only if rescue costs appear in the policy and the sport has been accepted. An emergency landing in a wood or on a steep slope calls for resources that would otherwise be entirely at your own expense.

Are you going flying?

Have it established in advance what your policy does; we find out which insurer accepts canopy flying.
