Sand skiing and your insurance

Sandboarding on skis means sliding down a dune on skis or a board, usually in desert country. Winter sports cover is written for snow and does nothing here.

In brief

The first mistake is to think of the winter sports module. That covers snow sports. A dune in Namibia, Peru or on the Canary Islands does not come under it. Skiing on sand is assessed as an other adventurous activity and with some insurers it simply runs along with the travel and accident cover.

The risks lie in the surroundings: heat, no infrastructure and medical care hours away. Transport by quad bike or buggy to get back to the top is often part of it, and that is exactly where the cover breaks down: driving without a valid licence or off the public road is generally excluded.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What is covered when skiing on sand?

Three parts of the excursion are assessed separately.

The descent

Skiing or boarding on sand

In itself rarely a named exclusion.

  • Recreational use usually included
  • Competitions separately
  • Hire equipment through the operator
The transport

Quad bike, buggy and 4x4

Motor vehicles have rules and exclusions of their own.

  • A valid driving licence required
  • Off-road driving often excluded
  • Liability through the WAM
The surroundings

Heat and distance

Help is far away and repatriation takes time.

  • Call in the emergency assistance centre
  • Travel advice from Buitenlandse Zaken (the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs)
  • Water and sun protection

Driving a quad bike without a valid licenceNoNo

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Destination. Europe or desert country
  • Organised or on your own: an operator counts in your favour
  • Motor vehicles in the excursion: a quad bike or buggy raises the risk
  • Duration of the trip: a day excursion or a tour
  • Sums insured: repatriation and medical costs
  • Taking part in races: timed descents assessed separately

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that go wrong more often on desert excursions than the descent itself.

It is not the skiing but the quad bike that costs you the cover

Also to mountain sports, air sports, deep diving and speed competitions policies contain an exclusion for driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence. In the Netherlands motor vehicles are also subject to the insurance obligation of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM); abroad the hire company arranges that, often with a high excess.

Kitesurfing and your insurance

Travel advice and remote areas determine the rest

If you travel to an area subject to negative travel advice, the cover lapses on virtually every travel policy. Even without such advice, the further from habitation, the more heavily search, rescue and repatriation costs weigh. Check that those items are in your policy before you book the excursion.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does my winter sports cover apply to skiing on sand?

No. That module is written for snow sports and names skiing and snowboarding on the piste. Skiing on sand falls outside it and is assessed as another recreational or adventurous activity. Ask your insurer to confirm that.

Is the quad bike ride to the top included?

Only with a valid licence for that vehicle. Without a licence the cover lapses, including for your own injury. Liability for damage caused with a motor vehicle falls outside the AVP and runs through the vehicle's insurance.

What does travel insurance do for heat injury?

Treatment after dehydration or sunstroke falls under medical costs abroad. Call the emergency assistance centre for a guarantee of payment. In a remote area, transport to hospital can take a long time and become expensive.

Is hire equipment insured?

Usually not through your travel insurance. That covers your own luggage. The hire company will recover damage to hired skis or boards from you. Ask in advance what deposit and excess apply and whether hire cover is available.

Are you booking a desert excursion?

Have it checked in advance that both the descent and the transport fall within your cover.
