Ballet skiing and your insurance

Ballet skiing takes place on a prepared piste and therefore counts with most insurers as ordinary winter sport. The acrobatic elements and competitions are where the cover can drop away.

In brief

Ballet skiing, also known as acroski, is a freestyle discipline on a gently sloping, prepared piste: turns, steps and figures with poles, to music. The risk lies not in the terrain but in the fall: twisted knees, shoulders and wrists. As a result, practised recreationally the sport is usually simply included in the winter sports cover on your travel insurance.

Two things can break that. If your routine includes jumps or somersaults, some insurers move the sport into the category of acrobatic skiing, with the same exclusion as for the snow park. And if you take part in competitions or the training for them, the competition exclusion applies almost everywhere. Have it confirmed in writing before departure what is included.

What is covered with ballet skiing?

Three things determine your cover: the winter sports module, the content of your routine and whether competition is involved.

In advance

Switch on winter sports cover

Without that module every form of skiing is excluded.

  • A separate module or days on the policy
  • Also on a short trip
  • Name the discipline if in doubt
On the piste

Figures and jumps

Acrobatic elements are assessed differently from an ordinary descent.

  • Turns and steps: usually covered
  • Somersaults: often separately excluded
  • Only during opening hours
In an accident

Treatment and transport

Call the emergency assistance centre before you incur any costs.

  • A guarantee of payment for the clinic
  • Transport off the piste and ambulance
  • Keep invoices and the injury report

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine whether your policy pays out after a fall.

The piste is the criterion, not the name of the sport

The winter sports cover is written for skiing and snowboarding on an an open, prepared piste. Ballet skiing stays within that, but as soon as somersaults or jumps are added, insurers place it under acrobatic skiing and the same exclusion applies as for the snow park and half-pipe. If in doubt, declare the discipline when taking out the policy. The duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code rests with you.

Competitions and paid participation fall outside

Taking part in races and to the organised training for them is a standard exclusion, as is taking part for payment or as a (semi-)professional. Even where the cover does remain in place, Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Codestill applies: intent and recklessness are not covered, for example practising on a closed piste. Report an injury as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the discipline: with or without somersaults
  • Recreational or in competition: competitions call for a tailored solution
  • Destination. Europe or beyond
  • Duration of the trip: a single week or the whole season
  • Sums insured: mainly for injury and disability
  • Winter sports module and excess: can be added separately or included in the package

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does ballet skiing fall under ordinary winter sports cover?

Practised recreationally and on an open piste, usually yes. The winter sports module covers skiing on the piste, and ballet skiing stays within that. If your routine includes somersaults, some insurers apply the exclusion for acrobatic skiing.

Do I have to declare the sport separately?

Only if you perform jumps, train for competitions or teach. For ordinary recreational practice the winter sports cover is sufficient. If in doubt, declare it anyway: written confirmation in advance prevents argument after an accident.

Are my skis and poles insured?

Theft and damage during transport are often covered by the luggage section, subject to a limit. Breakage while actually skiing is usually excluded. For hired equipment the hirer's deposit arrangement applies, not your travel insurance.

What if I hit another skier?

Then your liability insurance comes into play, under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. It covers injury and damage you cause to someone else. Damage to borrowed or hired items in your care usually falls outside it.
