Climbing skins · avalanche risk · high mountains

Ski touring and your insurance

In ski touring you climb on skins, away from the lifts and often outside the ski area. Insurers assess that not as winter sport on the piste, but as a mountain sport.

In brief

The difference from piste skiing lies in the ascent. You move for hours through unpatrolled terrain, far from the piste service, and the descent goes through snow that nobody has checked. Avalanches, a misstep in hard snow and a change in the weather are the main risks.

On travel policies ski touring therefore comes under the mountain sports exclusion, often described as trips off the marked piste or involving the use of climbing equipment. If you cross a glacier, with a rope and crampons, the exclusion is almost always absolute and additional cover is needed.

What is covered with ski touring?

Three things determine the assessment: the terrain, the equipment and the declaration in advance.

The site

Route and altitude

A marked ski touring route is weighed differently from a glacier tour.

  • A marked touring route
  • Unpatrolled high mountains
  • A glacier with a rope
The equipment

Kit and avalanche set

Using climbing equipment moves the sport into mountain sports.

  • Avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe
  • Crampons and ice axe
  • Rope technique on the glacier
In an accident

Searching, recovery and huts

Help is further away than in a ski area.

  • Call the emergency assistance centre
  • Helicopter recovery
  • The mountain rescue report

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine whether your policy pays after an accident in touring terrain.

Climbing equipment is often the criterion in the conditions

In addition to mountain sports, air sports, deep diving and speed competitions many policies apply a practical dividing line: as soon as you use a rope, an ice axe or crampons , it counts as a mountain sport. A touring route without that equipment is sometimes still accepted; a glacier tour hardly ever without an extension.

Mountaineering and rock climbing

Setting off under an avalanche warning costs you the cover

Even with accepted cover, Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code still applies: no payment in the event of intent or recklessness. Setting off while the avalanche bulletin is high, or entering a closed slope, comes under it. Report an accident immediately to the emergency assistance centre and your insurer (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of tour — a touring route or a glacier
  • Use of climbing equipment — moves the risk class
  • With or without a mountain guide — supervision is taken into account
  • Purpose and amount — the Alps, Scandinavia or further afield
  • Duration of the trip — a day tour or a hut-to-hut tour
  • Sums insured — searching, recovery and disability

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is ski touring covered under the winter sports module?

Often not. That module is written for skiing within the ski area. Trips off the marked piste come under mountain sports and call for additional cover. Some insurers do accept marked touring routes once they have been declared.

What is the difference from deep powder skiing?

With deep powder skiing you usually stay in or beside the ski area and go up by lift. With ski touring you climb yourself, hours away from the piste service. That difference in distance mainly determines the rescue costs.

Does a ski mountaineering race count separately?

Yes. Timed competitions come under the exclusion for speed events, even without an engine. If you take part in a classification or a ski touring race, declare that separately; recreational participation is assessed differently from a race.

Are my skis and avalanche equipment insured?

Sports equipment falls under the luggage cover, but with restrictions: damage during use, wear and tear and breakage are usually excluded. Theft from a locked space is generally covered. Hired equipment runs through the hire company.

Are you planning a ski tour?

Have it established before departure whether your route falls within the cover; we check it with the insurer.
