Medical expenses and accidents

Ice sailing is water sport on ice: a sailing craft on runners that goes far faster than a skater. Insurers therefore rarely treat it as ordinary winter sport.

On smooth ice an ice yacht reaches speeds that are not possible with an ordinary sailing boat. That also makes the two typical losses different: a collision or a fall at high speed, and the natural ice giving way. The winter sports module of a travel insurance is written for the piste and usually does not mention ice sailing.
What to look out for: whether it falls under the winter sports cover, under a water sports clause, or under neither. Declare the sport before departure and ask for written confirmation. For the craft itself a travel insurance offers no cover. That is equipment, not luggage.
Liability is the second track. If you run into another sailor or a skater, that is judged under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Many liability policies have an exception for vessels; whether an ice yacht falls under it depends on the definition in your conditions.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThree tracks determine your position: injury, liability and the craft itself.
Only if the sport does not fall under an exclusion.
A collision on the ice runs through your AVP, provided it does not exclude vessels.
Damage to or theft of the craft is not travel luggage.

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Two points that determine whether your policy pays after an accident on the ice.
Travel and accident policies exclude as standard speed competitions and training for them, alongside mountain sports, air sports and diving below the certified depth. With ice sailing, going onto ice that has not been released is added: if you go onto the ice despite a warning, that is your own choice and the insurer will use it against you in assessing the claim.
When the insurance is taken out, Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies: you state what the insurer can reasonably want to know. If you conceal a risk sport, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code when you claim and pay less or nothing. Report an accident immediately as well (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).
This is what people ask us most.
Usually not automatically. That module is written for skiing and snowboarding on the piste. Ice sailing is more likely to be treated as water sport or as a separate risk sport. Ask your insurer for written confirmation before departure.
Not on a travel insurance. That covers luggage, not a sports craft. For damage to or theft of the craft you need separate cover; transport on a trailer falls under different conditions again.
In principle your liability insurance, under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Do watch the vessels clause in your conditions: if it excludes vessels, the insurer can refuse the claim and you are left carrying it.
Search and rescue costs are by no means always included, certainly not on ice that has not been released. Call the emergency assistance centre before you incur costs and keep the emergency service's report.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
Have it recorded before the season what cover you have. We find out which insurer accepts this sport.
