With a Royal Enfield the question is rarely which cover is widest, but from what point own-damage cover still justifies itself against the value of the machine.

Royal Enfield sits in a price bracket in which the sums around own-damage cover look different from the more expensive makes. The machine is insurable like any other: third-party liability is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), and above that you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive. The difference is that the value to be paid falls relatively quickly, while the own-damage premium does not fall at the same rate.
On top of that, these machines are often a first motorcycle. Anyone starting without no-claims years enters at the bottom of the no-claims scale and pays considerably more in the first years than a rider with a history built up. With a low own-damage premium that effect is relatively large.
Weigh those two things together. Look at what own-damage cover costs over a few years against the value that would still be payable then, and take the excess into account. the general page on motorcycle insurance for how the basic cover is built up.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others with your motorcycle.
Theft, fire, storm and glass damage.
Including your own fault and a single-vehicle fall.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to another road user | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft with an approved lock | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire or storm in storage | No | Yes | Yes |
| A single-vehicle fall with no other party | No | No | Yes |
| Motorcycle clothing and helmet | No | No | Sometimes |
| Track use and speed competitions | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
On a total loss, own-damage cover pays the value of the machine at the time of the loss, less your excess. That value falls each year. The premium for third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive does not fall proportionately. So work out once a year what the own-damage cover costs you against what is still payable. If the two come close, third-party liability with a good legal expenses or accident solution is often more sensible.
A repair becomes an economic total loss as soon as the repair costs approach the value. On a machine of modest value that happens after a fall that would simply have been repaired on a more expensive machine. You then receive the value less the salvage value of the wreck and less the excess, not the repair. If you want to keep the wreck, the salvage value is set off.
Without a history built up you start low on the no-claims scale. If you drove a car before, ask whether those no-claims years can be carried across or taken into account; they are in Roy-data and are linked to one vehicle at a time. After a claim the insurer pays, you drop several steps, and that effect works through the rate for years.
A payment costs you the excess and a drop in steps that works through for years. With minor fall damage, paying yourself can work out cheaper. Reporting remains compulsory: Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires notification as soon as you know of the loss, even where you decide not to claim. That keeps the option open if the damage turns out to be greater than you thought.
Almost every insurer requires an ART-approved lock, often category 4 or higher, and for more expensive motorcycles a tracker or locked storage. Keep the purchase receipt for the lock and both keys. These are the first things asked for in a claim.
Motorcycle clothing does not fall under the own-damage cover for the motorcycle. Some insurers offer an extension, sometimes only in combination with an accident in which the motorcycle was also damaged. For a full suit plus helmet, the amount quickly exceeds a thousand euros.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
That depends on the value and on the kind of loss you fear. Third-party, fire and theft covers theft, fire, storm and glass damage, but not your own fall. On a new machine comprehensive is defensible; as the value falls, the balance shifts. Set the own-damage premium over a few years against what would still be payable then.
The value of the machine at the time of the loss, less the excess and less the salvage value of the wreck if you keep it. Not the repair costs and not the purchase price. Because at a lower value a repair quickly costs more than that value, fall damage that is limited in itself is settled as a total loss sooner than you expect.
You start at the bottom of the no-claims scale and pay more in the first years. If you drove a car before, ask whether those years can be carried across; they are recorded in Roy-data and can be linked to one vehicle at a time. Every claim-free year gains a step. After a payment you drop several steps and that works through for years.
Often yes. You lose the excess and drop steps as well, which works through the premium for years. Ask the insurer what the drop means before you decide. You have to report the loss in any event. The law requires notification as soon as you know of it, even where you ultimately claim nothing for it.
