Insuring a pick-up

With a pick-up, the insurance question is not in the cab but in the bed behind it: it is open, and what lies in it falls outside every vehicle policy.

In brief

A pick-up with a closed cab and an open load bed is normally treated as a van for tax purposes. That is not decisive for the insurance; what counts there is mainly whether you drive it privately or for business and what you carry or tow with it.

The characteristic problem is the open load bed. It cannot be locked, and insurers therefore set stricter requirements for separate cover on the load than they would for a closed van. Without a hard cover, and without emptying the bed outside working hours, theft is in practice not covered.

American versions are almost always imported. That brings in questions about valuation, parts and repair times, just as with a car still on foreign plates.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The load bed is not a luggage compartment

Tools, materials or scaffolding in the bed are not part of the vehicle and therefore fall outside own-damage cover. Separate cover for your own goods in transit is needed for that. Because a load bed cannot be locked, insurers attach conditions: a hardtop or hard roller cover, and an empty bed outside working hours. Anyone who does not meet those conditions is left empty-handed after a theft.

Declare accessories and modifications with their value

A hardtop, roll bar, winch, side steps, a raised suspension or a larger set of wheels is not included in the list price. Without a declaration, the insurer pays for the standard version in the event of a total loss and the rest is for your account. A lift or a non-standard tyre size may also require type approval; if the modification has not been approved, that is in itself a ground for refusing payment.

What you tow follows its own rules

A trailer coupled to the pick-up falls, for liability purposes, under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. Damage to the trailer itself and to the load on it does not; that needs its own cover. If the trailer breaks away on the road, that cover stops. Check as well that the actual towing weight stays within the permitted mass on the registration certificate.

With American imports, the agreed value counts

Imported pick-ups have specifications that differ from the European version, and there is often no Dutch reference for the market value. Have the vehicle valued and record that value on the policy, otherwise the insurer decides for itself what it was worth in the event of a total loss. Bear in mind too that parts have to be imported, which lengthens repair times; consequential loss from being off the road is not covered.

Import: inspection and valuation

American pick-ups are usually imported and have specifications that differ from the European version. Have the vehicle valued and keep the import documents; without a Dutch reference, market value does not do the vehicle justice.

Insuring an imported car

Your no-claims years are held in Roy-data

You build up no-claims years for each year without an at-fault claim, and you usually lose five at once when a claim is paid. They are registered in Roy-data, the central system of Dutch insurers, and therefore transfer automatically to a new insurer. With most insurers, glass damage does not count.

Car insurance

Work out whether claiming pays

With an at-fault claim you usually lose five no-claims years and your premium rises for years, because you then climb back up step by step. For a small claim, paying yourself can be cheaper. Always ask for a damage assessment before you finalise a claim.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Private or business use — This determines the rate and which additional covers are needed.
  • Value including accessories — A hardtop, winch and suspension only count if you have declared them.
  • Imported or European version — With an import, the valuation and the availability of parts come into play.
  • Weight and engine power — Because of their mass, pick-ups sit higher in the rating than an equivalent car.
  • What you carry and tow — The load and a trailer call for separate cover alongside the vehicle policy.
  • Storage location — With an open bed, where the vehicle is kept outside working hours weighs heavily.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Are my tools in the load bed insured?

Not on the vehicle policy. Separate cover for your own goods in transit is needed. Because the bed cannot be locked, the insurer attaches conditions: normally a hard cover or hardtop, and an empty bed outside working hours. Without those measures, theft is in practice not paid.

Do I have to report a hardtop or winch?

Yes, and with a value. Accessories are not part of the list price on which the premium is based. Without a declaration you are paid for the standard version in the event of a total loss. With a lift or a non-standard tyre size, check as well that the modification has been approved; without approval, payment can be refused.

Does my trailer fall under the pick-up policy?

For liability it does, as long as the trailer is coupled to the towing vehicle. Damage to the trailer itself or to the load on it does not fall under it and needs its own cover. If the trailer breaks away, cover from the pick-up stops. Watch the permitted towing weight as well.

What extra do I arrange for an imported pick-up?

An inspection by the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) and, where the specifications differ, a valuation recorded on the policy. Keep the import documents and the purchase invoice. Without an agreed value, the insurer determines the market value itself in the event of a total loss, and that rarely does an import justice.
