Insuring your Honda motorcycle

Honda builds both light machines for an A1 licence and heavy tourers with full equipment. That spread explains why the premium for two Hondas can be far apart.

In brief

The make itself does little for the premium. What counts is the engine capacity, power output, market value and how prone to theft the specific type is. A light Honda for the city, a middleweight and a fully equipped tourer sit in different rating groups, even though all three carry the same badge. What a form of cover involves exactly is set out on the page motorcycle insurance cover; the comparison itself runs through motorcycle insurance.

Two features of this make come up regularly in claims handling. The first is the extensive accessory list: pannier sets, a top box, crash bars, hand guards, a taller screen and a satnav mount. Those parts are insured only if they appear on the policy schedule, usually within a separate section with a limit of its own. Without that entry the loss adjuster looks at the standard specification and you pay the difference yourself.

The second is import. Many models are ridden in the Netherlands as imported examples, sometimes in a different specification or with an unclear history. Insurers then ask for an import declaration and the registration certificate, and setting the value becomes harder because there is no Dutch reference price. An an agreed value valuation by an expert prevents that afterwards; Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code prevents you from ending up better off after a loss than you were before.

What to look out for

Four points that arise more often with this make than under an average motorcycle policy.

Your licence category has to match the machine

A1, A2 and A each entitle you to a different class. If you ride a machine outside your entitlement on an A2 licence, or a restricted example without the required paperwork, you are an unauthorised rider. The insurer then does not have to pay for own damage and can recover from you what has been paid to the other party. Keep the evidence of a power restriction with the registration certificate.

Accessories determine the claims burden

In a fall, a pannier system or a fitted screen is often broken before the machine itself. Have the complete list with purchase values included. Also watch the maximum payment of the accessories section and the provision that loose parts are covered only while they are fitted to the machine. A pannier lying loose in the shed falls under the home contents cover.

Security is a condition

For own-damage cover, insurers usually require an an approved lock of a particular class, sometimes supplemented by a chain to a fixed point or a tracking system. That requirement applies at home in your own shed as well. If the machine is stolen while the lock was not used, cover lapses, however good the rest of the security was.

Three things that are in no version at all

Runs on a circuit or during rider training on a closed site are excluded, even where it is a matter of practice. Hire and carriage for hire or reward fall outside. And motorcycle clothing and helmet are not on the own-damage cover. There is a separate section for that, which usually pays out only where the machine itself has been damaged too.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Engine capacity and power: the main classification for the third-party liability part
  • Market value or purchase price: determines the own-damage premium and the payout ceiling
  • Age and how long you have held a licence: how long you have held the category A licence counts
  • No-claims years: registered per vehicle in the name of the regular rider
  • Storage and postcode: theft figures differ widely by area
  • Annual mileage: a tourer with high mileage is weighed differently from seasonal use

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

I hold an A2 licence. Can I insure any Honda?

Insuring and being allowed to ride are two different questions. An insurer sometimes accepts an application while your category does not entitle you to ride that machine. When a claim is made this is checked after all, and it is declined for riding without entitlement. If you ride a restricted example, keep the declaration of the power restriction with the vehicle papers.

Are my panniers and sat nav covered as well?

Only if they appear on the policy schedule. Accessories fall under a separate section with a limit of its own, and that section usually pays out only for damage to or theft of the machine they were fitted to. Report at inception what has been fitted, with the purchase amounts, and update the list if you add something.

My machine is an import. Does that change the cover?

The cover stays the same, but acceptance and valuation are stricter. Insurers ask for the import papers and want to know whether it is a European or a non-European specification, because that affects the supply of parts. Where the specification differs, an agreed valuation is sensible, so that the value on a total loss is fixed in advance.

What happens if my machine is stolen?

You report it to the police, notify the insurer immediately and hand in all the keys. Under Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code that notification must follow as soon as you know of the theft or could reasonably have known of it. The insurer checks whether the prescribed security was used and usually applies a waiting period in which the machine may still turn up. Payment then follows on a market value, purchase price or agreed valuation basis.
