In brief

The G-Class sits on a ladder chassis with permanent four-wheel drive and differential locks. Exactly what that technology is intended for, driving off the public road, is excluded under many policy conditions. The WAM requires you to insure only for traffic on the road (Article 2 of the WAM). If you drive onto woodland, dunes or off-road land, only your own-damage cover determines whether the damage to the car itself is still paid for.

On top of that, the population of these cars consists of two very different groups. Older diesel versions are driven as a working vehicle or as an enthusiast's car with low mileage; recent high-powered versions almost always have to be comprehensively insured and are given additional security requirements. For the first group, an arrangement of the kind used for a classic car insurance is often more suitable than an ordinary car rate.

We record the year of manufacture, the version, any off-road modifications and the actual use before the policy starts, so that there is no argument afterwards about where and for what you were driving. You can read how the types of cover are built up on car insurance.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Trim level and engine power. A diesel version and a heavy AMG version fall into different rating groups.
  • Year of manufacture and type of policy. A standard rate or an enthusiast's arrangement with a fixed value. That makes a difference to the set-up and the premium.
  • Agreed annual mileage. Limited use brings the premium down, but ties you to the mileage limit you have given.
  • Security. For this category, insurers may require an alarm class or a vehicle tracking system.
  • Off-road modifications. A lift, snorkel, off-road tyres and winches count in acceptance and in the accessories cover.
  • Storage. A locked garage or shed as against a parking space in the street.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Off-road driving, the beach and events

As soon as you go onto rough terrain, you leave the area for which the WAM requires cover. Many own-damage conditions separately exclude damage during off-road driving, handling tests, off-road training and competitions. If damage occurs there, the insurer can also invoke Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code where it takes the view that you acted knowingly recklessly. If you want to go off-road, ask in writing in advance whether additional cover is possible.

Wading and damage underneath

Drawing in water while driving through a flooded road leads to engine damage that insurers treat as a mechanical defect or an inherent defect. That is excluded on every type of cover, comprehensive included. The same applies to wear on the drivetrain and the differential locks. Damage to the sump, fuel lines and axles caused by stones or an obstacle is conceivable under own-damage cover, but the expert will first look at whether the use fell within the policy.

Raised suspension, snorkel and off-road tyres

A lift kit, different springs, coarser off-road tyres, a snorkel or a roof rack change the characteristics of the car and sometimes the RDW records. These modifications fall under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and must also be reported after the policy has started. If that does not happen, the insurer can reduce the payment under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Undeclared accessories also often fall outside the payment in the event of theft.

The older G as an enthusiast's car

If the G is only driven for part of the year, an arrangement with an agreed annual mileage, a fixed value and a requirement about where it is kept suits it better than a standard rate. That gain has a downside: if you drive more kilometres than agreed or use the car for daily commuting after all, you are acting contrary to the policy and the insurer can limit the cover on a claim.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is damage on an off-road site covered?

Usually not. The compulsory third-party liability cover applies under Article 2 of the WAM to traffic on the road, and most own-damage conditions separately exclude off-road driving, training and tests. If you do want to go onto rough terrain, ask your insurer in writing beforehand whether that use is insured. Do not go on the assumption that comprehensive cover covers everything; here that is precisely what it does not do.

Is engine damage caused by driving through water covered?

No. Water drawn in through the intake causes damage that insurers class as a mechanical defect or as the result of your own actions. That damage falls outside third-party liability, outside third-party, fire and theft and outside comprehensive cover as well. The wading depth in the manufacturer's brochure says nothing about the cover under your policy. Only the policy conditions determine what is paid.

Do I have to declare a lift kit and larger tyres?

Yes. Modifications to the suspension, wheel size or bodywork change the risk and fall under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Declare them at the outset and also when you fit them later. If you conceal them, the insurer can reduce or refuse the payment under Article 7:930 DCC, and the modifications themselves usually remain unpaid in the event of theft.

Can an older G-Class go on an enthusiast's arrangement?

Often it can, but insurers each apply their own age limit and set conditions: an agreed annual mileage, locked storage and sometimes a second car for daily use. In return, a fixed value is usually agreed instead of market value. If you do not keep to the mileage or the storage requirement, the insurer can limit the cover on a claim.
