RAM · value over time · security · repair
With a Ram, insurance does not start with the form of cover but with the question of what the vehicle is according to the registration certificate: a car, a van or something in between.

Most Rams in the Netherlands run on a commercial (grey) registration. That is not just a tax detail: it decides whether the insurer treats the vehicle as a van, which rate applies and whether it requires the vehicle to be registered to a business. If you drive privately on a commercial registration, report it. A policy taken out for business use while the vehicle is driven privately leads to argument at claim stage.
The second point is mass and dimensions. A Ram is wider, higher and heavier than almost anything it shares the road with. In a collision the damage to the other party is therefore greater and the risk of injury higher. The liability part of your policy, compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), weighs more heavily on this vehicle than the own-damage side. Watch height restrictions as well: damage to a car park is damage to a third party’s property.
Many examples have been imported and modified: an LPG installation, different lighting, side steps, a hardtop or a raised suspension. Every modification belongs in the application. If you leave one out, that engages your duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. For other American models, see Chevrolet and Corvette.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others with the vehicle. Not your own vehicle.
Also, damage to your own vehicle from external causes.
Including damage to your own vehicle through your own fault.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party liability + fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to another vehicle | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft of your RAM | No | Yes | Yes |
| Windscreen damage or stone chips | No | Yes | Yes |
| Storm, hail and fire damage | No | Yes | Yes |
| Driving into a bollard yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Track use, wear and intent | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Insurers generally assess a pick-up on a commercial registration as a van. That brings a different rate and often the condition that the vehicle is registered to the business and used for business. If you mainly use it privately, for towing a caravan or transporting horses, say so on the application. Fuel cards, the location of a claim and the mileage often reveal afterwards what use actually took place.
Because of the weight and the high bumper line, the damage to the other party is greater than with an ordinary car, and the chance of injury is higher. That makes third-party liability the most important part of the policy on this vehicle. Think of the height as well: if you hit a parking deck, a canopy or a bridge, that is damage to a third party’s property and runs through your liability cover, not through own damage.
As long as a trailer is coupled to the vehicle, liability for damage caused with it falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. Damage to the trailer or horsebox itself is not covered. A separate policy is needed for that. The load in the bed is not part of the motor insurance. A hardtop, tilt, roll bar or side step counts as an accessory and is only insured where you have declared it.
What stays outside cover: the load, the tools and the goods in the load bed; damage caused by overloading or by a load that was not properly secured; driving off the public road, such as on a site, beach or building site; an undeclared LPG installation, light bar or suspension change; wear and deferred maintenance; and damage caused by intent or recklessness within the meaning of Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Parts and specialist repair are scarce, which lengthens repair times considerably.
Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
That depends on the registration and on the actual use. On a commercial registration most insurers treat the vehicle as a van, with the accompanying conditions on registered keeper and business use. If the vehicle is on a private registration and you drive it privately, the car rate applies. We put the situation to several insurers, because policy varies widely here.
Liability for damage you cause to others with a coupled trailer falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. That follows from Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). Damage to the trailer itself, or to its contents, is not covered. For that you take out separate trailer insurance, certainly with an expensive horsebox.
Yes. A gas installation, raised or lowered suspension, extra lighting and a hardtop are modifications the insurer wants to know about when underwriting. If you do not report them you breach the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code to reduce or refuse payment when you claim.
No. Motor insurance covers the vehicle and the declared accessories, not the goods you carry. Tools, machinery or materials in the load bed are insured through goods or business contents cover. Damage caused by a load coming loose and hitting others does fall under your liability cover, but the insurer can seek recovery if the load was not properly secured.
