Third-party liability
- Damage to other vehicles and injury
- No cover for your own motorhome
- Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
- Does not cover your professional indemnity
Camper van owned by the business · declare hire · contents insured separately
A camper van registered in the company's name is assessed differently from a private camper van. The purpose of use, the group of drivers and whether you hire it out determine which policy is suitable.

A motorhome with a registration falls under the the insurance requirement in Article 2 WAM, including where the registration is in the name of a bv, vof or sole trader. That obligation continues for as long as the registration is in the company's name, so also in the months when the vehicle is in storage. A suspension with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) lifts the obligation temporarily, but the vehicle may then not go on the public road and your third-party liability cover lapses as well.
With a business camper van, the deployment is decisive. Is it used as a mobile office or demonstration space, to take staff to projects, as a travelling stand at trade fairs, or is it hired out? Each of those forms has its own risk profile. Insurers assess them separately and letting to third parties is almost always excluded on a regular policy unless it has been expressly insured.
Own-damage cover concerns the vehicle and the fixed fittings. Everything you take with you falls outside it: tools, stock, demonstration material, laptops and measuring equipment belong under business contents or goods insurance, or under cover for own transport. Liability for the work itself, for example damage at a client's premises, runs through the public and employers' liability insurance and is assessed under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Three types of cover, with the situations that arise most often in business use set out below.
The legally required cover for damage caused to others with the motorhome.
On top of that to third-party liability, a fixed list of events such as theft, fire, glass, storm and hail.
Also damage to your own motorhome through your own doing or with no other party involved.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive cover |
|---|---|---|
| Damage to someone else during a journey to a project | Yes | Yes |
| Damage to your own vehicle caused by too low a headroom or canopy | No | Yes |
| Theft of the motorhome or a break-in with signs of forced entry | No | Yes |
| Tools, stock or equipment on board | No | Provided that |
| Hire to third parties without notification | No | No |
| Damage to the work you carry out at a client's premises | No | No |
What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.
Four points on which a camper van owned by the business differs from a private one.
Insurers assess not the make but the deployment. A camper van serving as a mobile office or demonstration space often stands still in changing locations and runs a break-in risk there. A camper van that takes staff to projects covers a lot of miles instead. Describe the use concretely on the application and make sure it appears on the policy schedule. A policy with too broad or too vague a description leads to discussion when you claim.
Own-damage cover concerns the vehicle and the fixed fittings. Tools, stock, samples, laptops and measuring equipment fall outside it and belong under business contents or goods insurance, or under cover for own transport. Note the forced-entry requirement: theft without signs of forced entry is almost never paid for, and many policies exclude theft from an unattended vehicle in the street at night altogether.
The following, among others, are outside the cover: hire or shared use that has not been declared; permanent occupation; damp and leakage damage from deferred maintenance of joints and sealant; frost damage because the water system has not been drained; and driving without the required licence category or under the influence. Wear and mechanical defects without a collision fall outside it, as does damage caused by intent or recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code).
If employees drive the vehicle, the duty of care in Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code and good employment practice (Article 7:611 of the Dutch Civil Code) continues to apply. The case law derives from it an obligation to have proper insurance for taking part in traffic during working hours. A camper van policy does not cover that. When the policy is taken out, the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codealso applies: if you withhold hire, storage in the street or previous claims, the payout can be reduced or refused (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
Yes, but on a commercial policy. Private camper van insurance generally requires a natural person as policyholder and a private purpose of use. If the registration is in the name of a business, the insurer will point to that condition when you claim. Choose a policy that covers the legal form and the actual use, and have private use noted separately if it occurs.
Only on a policy that expressly permits hire. Hire to third parties is a fundamentally different risk: changing drivers, more miles and a higher chance of damage and theft. Regular policies exclude it. If you hire it out without declaring it, the insurer can refuse the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and cancel the policy.
Not under own-damage cover. Tools, stock and equipment belong under business contents or goods insurance, or under cover for own transport. Look at the limit, the excess and above all at the forced-entry requirement. Many policies exclude theft from a vehicle left unattended in the street at night entirely, even where there has been a break-in.
Up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kilograms a category B licence is enough; above that a category C1 licence is needed. Check part I of the registration document for the weight that applies, and bear in mind that full tanks, luggage and equipment bring the actual weight close to the limit. Driving without the required category is an exclusion for damage to your own camper van.
Yes, for as long as the registration is in the company's name, because Article 2 WAM links the obligation to the registration and not to the use. If you want to save money, suspend the registration with the RDW; you may then not drive it or park it on the public road. It is wise to keep own-damage cover in place against fire and theft in storage.
Request a quote without obligation using the registration number. We record the purpose of use and the drivers correctly from the outset.
