In brief

A camper van has its own registration number and therefore falls under the the insurance requirement in Article 2 WAM. Third-party liability cover is compulsory for as long as the registration is in your name, including in the months when the vehicle is in storage. If you want to end that obligation in winter, you suspend the registration with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority). You may then not drive it or park it on the public road. Damage to the camper van itself falls under third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover.

The body is what makes it different from a car. Besides the chassis, you insure the fixed fittings and, separately, the contents and camping equipment: crockery, bedding, awning, bicycle rack and electronics. That contents cover has its own sum insured and its own excess. Work out what you actually take with you; too low an amount leads to underinsurance and therefore to a proportionately lower payout when you claim.

With this type of camper van, pay attention to the maintenance of seams and sealant beads. Damp and leak damage resulting from deferred maintenance is excluded as standard, and on older examples that is precisely the most common type of claim. A periodic damp reading at the dealer limits that risk and with some insurers is even a condition for own-damage cover on the body.

Which cover suits a Hobby camper van?

Three types of cover, with the situations that arise most often with a camper van set out below.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others with the motorhome.

  • Damage to other vehicles and injury
  • No cover for your own motorhome
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Rarely suitable for a recent camper van
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

On top of that to third-party liability, a fixed list of events such as theft, fire, glass, storm and hail.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Fire, storm and hail damage
  • Windscreen damage and windscreen replacement
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
Most chosen

Comprehensive cover

Also damage to your own motorhome through your own doing or with no other party involved.

  • Collision, impact and manoeuvring damage
  • Damage with no known other party
  • Often a replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement
  • Business contents can be insured separately

What is covered

SituationThird-party liabilityComprehensive cover
Damage you cause to someone else with the motorhomeYesYes
Damage to the body caused by too low a headroomNoYes
Theft of the motorhome or a break-in with signs of forced entryNoYes
Camping equipment and contents in the camper vanNoProvided that

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What makes the difference with a camper van

Four points that work differently with a camper van than with a car.

Weight determines the driving licence

With a category B driving licence you may drive a vehicle up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kilograms. Heavier versions require a category C1 driving licence. Check on part I of the registration document which weight is stated, and note that a full water and diesel tank, a bicycle rack and luggage bring the actual weight close to the limit. Driving without the required licence category is an exclusion. The damage to your own camper van is then not paid for.

Value the contents separately

Own-damage cover concerns the vehicle and the fixed fittings. Loose items fall under separate contents or camping equipment cover with its own sum insured. Draw up a list with the purchase prices of the awning, bicycle rack, satellite installation, e-bikes and electronics, and keep receipts and photographs. Theft from the camper van is generally only paid for where there is traces of forced entry; items taken from an unlocked camper van or from an unsecured bicycle rack are at your own expense.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: damp and leak damage caused by deferred maintenance of seams, sealant beads or roof hatches; frost damage because the water system was not prepared for winter; theft of contents without signs of forced entry; hire to third parties or permanent occupation that has not been declared; and driving without the required licence category or under the influence. Wear and mechanical defects without a collision fall outside it, as do intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Check the territorial limits and the assistance cover

The green card sets out in which countries the third-party liability cover applies. If you drive outside that area there is no cover and you need separate frontier insurance. Also check whether assistance abroad is included: replacement transport, repatriation of the camper van and accommodation during repairs are expensive and are not part of every policy as standard. You report a claim as soon as is reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price and year of manufacture: a higher value means a higher premium
  • Weight class of the motorhome: a separate rate above 3.500 kg
  • Number of kilometres per year: many policies have a limit
  • Storage out of season: indoor storage lowers the risk
  • Age and claims history of the driver: no-claims years count towards it
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to insure my camper van in winter as well?

Yes, for as long as the registration is in your name. Article 2 WAM links the insurance obligation to the registration, not to the use. If you want to save money during the storage period, you suspend the registration with the RDW. Note: while the registration is suspended, third-party liability cover also lapses and the vehicle may not stand on the public road. It is wise to keep own-damage cover in place against fire and theft in storage.

Are the contents insured automatically?

No. Own-damage cover concerns the vehicle and the fixed fittings. Camping equipment, crockery, clothing, electronics and bicycles fall under separate contents cover with its own sum insured and excess. Choose that amount on the basis of the actual purchase value; if the amount is too low, underinsurance applies and proportionately less is paid out.

Are bicycles on the bicycle rack covered?

Only if the policy says so expressly, and usually with a limit per bicycle and a requirement that they are secured to the rack with an approved lock. E-bikes are often mentioned separately or excluded because of their high value. Ask about this in advance, keep the purchase invoices and note the additional requirement that the camper van itself must be locked and not left unattended.

What happens with damp damage in the body?

Damp that gets in through aged seams, sealant beads or roof hatches counts as the result of deferred maintenance and is excluded. Only damp damage that is the direct result of an insured event, such as a collision or hail, qualifies for payment. Have the camper van checked for damp periodically and keep the reports; a few insurers set that as a condition.

May I hire out my camper van to private individuals?

Not without declaring it. Hiring out through a platform or to acquaintances for payment changes the risk fundamentally and is usually excluded on a private policy. Insurers that do accept it charge a separate premium or refer you to a hire policy. If you hire out the vehicle without declaring it, the insurer can refuse the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.
