In brief

The first distinction is a legal one. A camper van is a motor vehicle with its own registration number and falls under the the insurance requirement in Article 2 WAM. A caravan is a trailer without an engine of its own: when it is coupled to your car, liability falls under the third-party liability cover of that towing vehicle. Damage to the caravan itself is in neither case covered without separate own-damage insurance.

For the caravan you therefore take out caravan insurance with own-damage cover, and for the camper van a camper van policy with third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover. On a make with a relatively high new price, the question of the basis of valuation matters: does the insurer work with market value, with a depreciation schedule or with a fixed purchase price arrangement for the first few years? That difference determines what you actually receive in the event of a total loss or theft.

The fittings need attention of their own. Furniture, fridge and sanitary fittings belong to the fixed fittings and fall under own-damage cover; crockery, awning, bicycles and electronics are business contents with a separate sum insured. The most common type of claim is damp damage: leaks through aged seams and sealant beads. That is excluded where there is deferred maintenance, and on older examples that is exactly what happens.

Which cover suits your Tabbert?

Three types of cover, with the situations that arise most often with a caravan and a camper van set out below.

Basic

Third-party liability, directly or through the towing vehicle

Liability: for a camper van through its own policy, for a caravan through the towing vehicle.

  • Damage to other vehicles and injury
  • Camper van: compulsory under Article 2 WAM
  • Caravan: covered through the car while coupled
  • No cover for damage to your own vehicle
Intermediate option

Third-party, fire and theft

A fixed list of events such as theft, fire, storm, hail and glass damage.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Storm, hail and fire damage
  • Damage caused by falling trees
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
Most chosen

Comprehensive cover

Also damage you cause yourself, such as impact damage while manoeuvring or an accident caused by snaking.

  • Collision and impact damage
  • Damage while manoeuvring and coupling
  • Often a purchase-value arrangement
  • Business contents can be insured separately

What is covered

SituationThird-party, fire and theftComprehensive cover
Theft of the caravan or camper van with signs of forced entryYesYes
Storm and hail damage while in storageYesYes
Impact damage because you drive into a post yourselfNoYes
Damage to the awning or canopyNoProvided that
Damp damage caused by aged seams and sealant beadsNoNo
Permanent occupation that has not been declaredNoNo

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What makes the difference with a Tabbert

Four points that determine whether damage to your caravan or camper van is paid for.

Caravan or camper van: two policies

A caravan does not need its own third-party liability insurance as long as it is coupled: liability then runs through the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. For damage to the caravan itself, and for theft from storage, separate caravan insurance is needed. For a motorised camper van, third-party liability cover is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), for as long as the registration is in your name. Do not confuse the two. The covers do not follow on from each other.

Record the basis of value in advance

Ask in writing how the value is determined in the event of a total loss or theft. Some policies apply for the first few years a purchase-value arrangement and after that a fixed depreciation percentage; others work with market value from the outset. For a well-maintained or restored example, a valuation can be worthwhile. Bear in mind that enrichment is not permitted: the payout remains limited by Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: damp and leak damage caused by deferred maintenance of seams, sealant beads and roof hatches; frost damage because the water system has not been drained; theft of contents without signs of forced entry; permanent occupation or hire to third parties without declaring it; and damage to the awning and canopy caused by wind, unless that has been insured separately. Wear, wood rot and intent or recklessness are likewise excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Storage, security and maintenance

Insurers set requirements for storage out of season and for security: a hitch lock or wheel clamp on a caravan, and on a camper van often an approved alarm or tracking system. Have the body checked periodically for damp and keep the reports. A few insurers make that a condition. When the policy is taken out, the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies: declare storage, use and previous claims honestly.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Purchase value and year of manufacture: a higher value means a higher premium
  • Caravan or motorised camper van: two different policies
  • Storage location out of season: indoor storage lowers the risk
  • Security: hitch lock, wheel clamp or tracker
  • Area of cover: travelling further costs more
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does my Tabbert caravan need its own third-party liability insurance?

No. As long as the caravan is coupled to your car, liability falls under the third-party liability cover of that towing vehicle. What you do arrange separately is damage to the caravan itself: theft, storm, fire and impact damage fall solely under own-damage cover on caravan insurance. For a motorised camper van, the insurance obligation in Article 2 WAM applies directly.

Is damp damage paid for?

Only if the damp damage is the direct result of an insured event, for example hail or a collision. Damp that gets in via aged seams, sealant beads or roof hatches counts as deferred maintenance and is excluded. So have the body checked periodically for damp, keep the reports and repair small leaks straight away; with a few insurers that check is a policy condition.

Is the awning covered?

Usually only as separate cover and with a limit. Damage to an awning or canopy caused by wind is also often excluded or tied to a wind force limit, because the risk depends heavily on how the awning was put up and whether it was taken down in bad weather. Ask for the exact condition and keep the purchase invoice for the awning.

Do I have to insure the contents separately?

Yes. Own-damage cover concerns the caravan or camper van and the fixed fittings. Crockery, bedding, clothing, electronics, bicycles and the awning fall under separate contents cover with its own sum insured and excess. Choose that amount on the basis of the actual purchase value; if the amount is too low, underinsurance applies and proportionately less is paid out.

May I live in it permanently?

Not without declaring it. Permanent occupation changes the risk fundamentally: gas, water and electricity are in constant use and the chance of fire and water damage increases. Almost every leisure policy excludes permanent occupation. If you want to stay in it for a long period, report that in advance, because otherwise the insurer can refuse the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.
