In brief

Start with the registration document. Part I states the maximum permitted mass. Up to 3,500 kilograms you may drive it with a category B driving licence, above that a category C1 driving licence is required. Full water and fuel tanks, tools and luggage bring the actual weight close to the limit; at a roadside check it is the weighed weight that counts. Driving without the required category is an exclusion and costs you your own-damage cover.

The second point is the insurance obligation. Article 2 WAM links it to the registration, not to the use: for as long as the registration is in your company's name, there has to be third-party liability cover, including in the months in storage. If you want to avoid those costs in a quiet period, you suspend the registration with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority). During the suspension the third-party liability cover lapses and the vehicle may not stand on the public road.

The third point is the use. Insurers distinguish between business transport, use as a mobile office, letting to third parties and private use by the business owner. Each of those forms has to be stated on the policy schedule. The fourth point is the area of cover on the green card: if you drive outside the countries listed, there is no third-party liability cover and you need separate frontier insurance.

Which cover do you choose?

Three types of cover, with the situations that arise most often with a business camper van set out below.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage caused to others with the motorhome.

  • Damage to other vehicles and injury
  • No cover for your own motorhome
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • The territorial limits follow the green card
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

On top of that to third-party liability, a fixed list of events such as theft, fire, glass, storm and hail.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Fire, storm and hail damage
  • Windscreen damage and windscreen replacement
  • Suitable for an older camper van
Additional

Own-damage cover with assistance

Comprehensive cover supplemented by breakdown and accident assistance in the Netherlands and abroad.

  • Collisions and manoeuvring damage
  • Replacement transport or accommodation
  • Repatriation of the camper van
  • Business contents can be insured separately

What is covered

SituationThird-party liabilityOwn-damage cover with assistance
Damage to someone else within the area on the green cardYesYes
Damage in a country that is not on the green cardNoNo
Damage to your own vehicle after a collision or a manoeuvreNoYes
A breakdown abroad with replacement accommodationNoProvided that
Driving above 3,500 kg without a category C1 licenceNoNo
Hire or private use that has not been declaredNoNo

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Four things to find out in advance

These points determine whether the policy will match how you actually use the camper van.

Weight and driving licence category

Note the maximum permitted weight from part I of the registration document and compare it with your drivers' licences. Up to 3,500 kilograms it is enough to hold a category B driving licence; above that, C1 is required, with its own medical examination and period of validity. With a heavier camper van, also take account of different speed limits and toll rules abroad. Driving without the required category means no payment for your own damage and recovery from you of the amount paid to the other party.

Territorial limits and assistance

The green card lists the countries where the third-party liability cover applies. If you travel outside them, frontier insurance is needed. Also check whether assistance is insured and what it involves: towing and recovery costs, replacement transport, accommodation costs during repairs and repatriation of the camper van. With a large vehicle those costs run up quickly, and not every policy or assistance centre can repatriate a camper van of this size.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: hire to third parties or private use that is not stated on the policy; permanent occupation; damp and leakage damage from deferred maintenance of joints and sealant; frost damage because the water system has not been drained; theft of contents without signs of forced entry; and driving without the required licence category or under the influence. Intent and recklessness are also excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Reporting at the start, on changes and on a claim

On taking out the policy, the duty of disclosure applies under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Declare honestly who drives, how many kilometres you expect, where the camper van stands at night, whether it is hired out and whether there have been previous claims. If you withhold something the insurer would have taken into account on acceptance, the payout can be reduced or refused (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). You report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Maximum permitted mass: a separate rate above 3.500 kg
  • List price and year of manufacture: a higher value means a higher premium
  • Purpose of use and hire: letting counts most heavily
  • Area of cover: travelling further costs more
  • Storage out of season: a locked site lowers the risk
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What information does the insurer need?

The registration number, the maximum permitted weight, the year of manufacture and the list price, the expected number of kilometres, the storage place out of season, the group of drivers with their driving licence categories and a description of the use. Also state whether it is hired out or driven privately and whether there have been previous claims. A complete declaration prevents problems when a claim is handled.

What exactly does a suspension with the RDW do?

A suspension temporarily lifts the obligations attached to the registration, including the insurance obligation and vehicle tax. During the suspension the vehicle may not stand on the public road or be driven. Your third-party liability cover then lapses as well. So keep own-damage cover in place if you want to cover the fire and theft risk in storage.

Does the cover apply throughout Europe?

Only in the countries listed on the green card. Countries that are crossed out fall outside the cover. There you need frontier insurance. Check the card before every journey, including where you are passing through a country without stopping. Also check whether the assistance cover uses the same area. The two do not always run in step.

Are the contents covered?

Not automatically. Own-damage cover concerns the vehicle and the fixed fittings; camping equipment, tools, stock and electronics fall under separate business contents or goods insurance with its own sum insured. Note the forced-entry requirement: without signs of forced entry a claim is almost never paid, and theft from an unattended vehicle in the street is regularly excluded altogether.

Can I also use the camper van privately?

You can, provided private use is permitted on the policy schedule. If it states business use only, a claim during a holiday can be rejected because the vehicle was used outside the insured purpose. Have the entry changed in advance and keep the confirmation. The tax consequences of private use are a separate matter and one to discuss with your accountant.
