In brief

A van on a grey registration is intended for carrying goods and has its own premium basis and tax treatment. For a business owner that is often more favourable than a yellow registration: lower vehicle tax, deductible VAT and sometimes a lower premium. Third-party liability cover is required by law.

Conditions apply before you may drive on a grey registration (you are normally a business owner and use the van for business). At Finass Verzekert we look at the right set-up with you, compare several insurers and make sure tools and contents are insured as well.

Note the business owner condition, the business use, the tax consequences (VAT and benefit in kind) and insuring tools and contents as well. We advise you independently and arrange everything for you.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your van insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What does insuring a van on a grey registration cover, and what about the premium?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

The basic cover required by law. Suitable for an older van on a grey registration with a lower market value.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including damage you cause yourself, preferably on replacement value as new. Advisable for a new van on a grey registration.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What is a grey registration?

A grey registration is intended for vans used to carry goods, usually by business owners. It has its own premium basis and tax treatment, often more favourable than a yellow registration.

Which conditions apply to a grey registration?

As a rule you must be a business owner and use the van for business. The exact tax conditions are set by the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority). We make sure the insurance matches your situation.

Is a van on a grey registration cheaper to insure?

Often it is with business use: alongside the tax advantages (lower road tax, deductible VAT) the premium is sometimes lower. By comparing, you find the keenest premium.

May I also drive privately on a grey registration?

Private use of a van on a grey registration has tax consequences (benefit in kind). We look at the right set-up with you and insure the van to match the way you use it.

How do VAT and benefit in kind work?

With business use you can often reclaim the VAT; private use can give rise to a benefit in kind. Your accountant advises on the tax side, we make sure the policy is set up correctly.

Which cover should I choose for my van on a grey registration?

For an older van, third-party liability or third-party, fire and theft may be enough. For a newer van, or one used intensively for business, comprehensive cover is sensible. Calculate your premium using the tool.
