Flying along as a passenger
- Sometimes covered without a surcharge
- Ask in writing in advance
- The operator must be licensed
Hang gliding counts as an air sport for insurers. That is one of the standard exclusions on travel, personal accident and liability cover.

In hang gliding you hang in a harness beneath a fixed wing and launch from a slope or behind a winch. Insurers class that as air sports, together with paragliding, gliding and parachuting. Air sports appear in the exclusionson virtually every travel and personal accident policy, even for a single flight.
Your liability insurance usually does not help here either: it excludes damage caused with an aircraft. A tandem flight with a licensed pilot is a different matter. You are then a passenger and some insurers do provide cover. If you fly yourself, separate air sports cover needed.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThree questions determine your cover: are you flying yourself, have you declared it and who is liable.
As a passenger with a recognised operator, your position is better.
Flying yourself falls under the air sports exclusion.
An emergency landing in inhospitable terrain makes help expensive.

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Two points that determine whether your policy pays after a flying accident.
Four categories recur among the exclusions in virtually every travel and personal accident policy: mountain sports off the beaten track, air sports, deep diving and speed contests. Hang gliding inevitably falls under the second category. Many policies only cover travel as a passenger in an aircraft with an operating licence; a hang glider does not fall within that.
Parachuting and skydiving
If you hit a car, a roof or a bystander on landing, that does not run through ordinary liability insurance: it carries an exclusion for damage caused with aircraft. The assessment under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code still applies, but you bear the loss yourself without separate air sports cover.
This is what people ask us most.
Sometimes. Some insurers make an exception for passengers with a licensed operator, because you are not flying the aircraft yourself. Other policies exclude all air sports, including as a passenger. Ask about this in writing before the flight.
Usually not. Personal accident policies carry the same air sports exclusion as travel policies. Payment on death or permanent disability therefore lapses. Separate air sports cover exists, often through a flying club or a specialist insurer.
Then there is no cover for the consequences. What is more, an incorrect declaration touches on the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. The insurer can then limit or refuse the payout under Article 7:930 DCC.
Training flights fall under the same air sports exclusion as free flights. The school's insurance usually covers only its own liability, not your injury. Arrange your own cover before you start the course.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
Have it confirmed before your first flight whether air sports are included. We will find out which insurer accepts it.
