Travel, accidents and AVP
- Injury as occupant or pilot
- An AVP excludes aircraft
- Even on an introductory flight
To an insurer, gliding is not a sport but aviation. On ordinary travel, personal accident and liability policies it is almost always excluded.

You fly an unpowered aircraft that is launched by winch or tow plane. That makes it an aircraft, and that changes everything: travel insurance, personal accident insurance and personal liability insurance for private individuals usually exclude aviation and air sports. The exclusion applies to an introductory flight or a training flight as well.
What does have to be arranged falls outside your package policy. A glider is subject to a compulsory insurance requirement for liability towards third parties; that cover belongs to the aircraft and is taken out by the owner or the club. Injury to the pilot is not covered by it — for that you need personal accident cover that includes aviation needed.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThree tracks run alongside each other: your own policies, the cover around the aircraft and your own risk of injury.
Here aviation is among the standard exclusions.
Compulsory cover for damage to third parties and to property on the ground.
Permanent injury affects your income, not just your travel cover.

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Two points that determine whether anyone pays after an accident.
On virtually every travel and personal accident policy three categories fall outside the cover: air sports and aviation other than as a passenger on a scheduled flight, mountain sports off the beaten track and speed contests. Gliding falls entirely into the first category. On top of that, the AVP excludes damage caused with an aircraft, while under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code you may well be liable.
Parachuting and skydiving
If you fly regularly, declare it when you take out personal accident, term life or disability insurance (AOV). That is the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; a breach can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Flying without a valid certificate of competence, or in an aircraft that is not airworthy, is assessed under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
This is what people ask us most.
Almost never. Travel policies cover you as a passenger on a scheduled flight, not as the pilot or occupant of a glider. The exclusion for aviation and air sports applies to a one-off introductory flight as well.
That belongs to the aircraft and is arranged by the owner or the gliding club; aircraft are subject to compulsory insurance. Ask whether you are covered as a pilot under that policy and what amount is insured.
Damage to crops, fencing or the aircraft itself is not covered by your travel insurance. Recovery and repair costs run through the cover attached to the aircraft, often with an excess for the pilot or the club.
It may. Many AOV policies contain an exclusion or a surcharge for air sports. Declare the sport when you apply and have it recorded in writing whether disability caused by a flying accident is included.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
Have it recorded before your first flight what cover you have. We will find out which insurer accepts aviation.
