In brief
Finass acts as broker for several insurers. Avéro Achmea is a company that offers its personal lines insurance through intermediaries. You therefore do not take it out online directly. The choice for this company follows from the conditions that suit your situation, not from a preference in advance. You will find the wider range under Avéro Achmea general insurance.
For a car policy it comes down to three questions. First the basis of value: is there a purchase price or replacement value as new arrangement, and how many months does it run? After that you fall back on market value, with all the consequences in a total loss. Second the choice of own-damage cover between third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover. Third the way damage is repaired: through an approved repairer with a reduced excess, or freely chosen with a different payment.
If you already have more with the same company, a package is a realistic option. Buildings, home contents, legal expenses and car on one policy gives a discount and one point of contact for claims. Do make sure you do not take out cover twice: motor legal expenses cover is sometimes already included in the car policy and sometimes in the legal expenses policy, and double insurance produces no double payment under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

What to look out for
Four points that genuinely determine the comparison between this policy and another.
How long the replacement value as new arrangement runs
The term of a purchase price or replacement value as new arrangement differs per company and per car, and after it ends the market value applies. In the first years in particular that difference is large. Also look at whether the arrangement applies to theft and not only to collisions, and from what percentage of damage the car is treated as a write-off.
What a claim does to your discount
Every at-fault claim paid puts you back down the no-claims scale. A no-claims protector keeps your step in place, but does not always protect you against a premium increase and lapses after a certain number of claims. Also ask whether glass damage, theft and a collision with an animal are recorded as non-fault claims.
The broker in the claims process
On a policy through an intermediary you report a claim to your broker, who passes it on and follows the file. That helps in an argument about market value, the excess or liability towards the other party. Your duty to report remains with you: Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires a report as soon as you reasonably know of the loss.
Standard exclusions you cannot negotiate away
Outside every cover remains damage from civil commotion, situations of war and nuclear reactions, damage during seizure or requisition by the authorities, and damage while the driver was not entitled to drive because of a driving ban or a licence that had been withdrawn. Intent and reckless conduct are also excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.
What does your premium depend on?
- Vehicle details: list price, weight, year of manufacture and type of fuel
- No-claims years built up: taken from the central register
- Age of the regular driver: the heaviest factor after the claims record
- Place of residence: claims and theft figures per postcode area
- Number of policies in the package: more products usually gives more discount
- Additional sections: passenger and legal expenses cover count separately
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Can I take out this insurance direct?
No, this company works through brokers. We request the quotation, set the conditions alongside those of other insurers and handle the application. After that you can still come to us for changes, renewal and claims. That does not mean we recommend this company: which policy fits best only emerges from the comparison.
Do I take my no-claims years with me when I switch?
Yes. No-claims years are recorded centrally and are requested by the new insurer when the old policy ends. The discount can still work out differently, because every company uses its own no-claims scale. The same years therefore do not produce the same percentage everywhere. We take that difference into account when comparing.
What if the other party disputes liability?
The claim is then assessed on the basis of the accident statement form, witness statements and, where applicable, a police report. Recovering your own loss from a liable other party goes through the recovery service or through legal expenses cover. Without own-damage cover and without legal expenses cover you are on your own in such an argument, even if you are convinced you are right.
Does my premium change if I move?
Probably. The postcode of the address where the car is kept is one of the rating factors. So report a move, even if the premium goes up as a result. The same applies to a change of regular driver or a substantially changed annual mileage. That information forms the basis on which the insurer accepted the risk.
