Tijgeren (belly crawling) and your insurance

Leopard crawling means moving forward on your elbows and stomach, usually under barbed wire or nets in a survival or obstacle run. As an act in itself it is not a high-risk sport for insurers.

In brief

Leopard crawling does not appear in policy conditions. What does count is the event at which you do it. An ordinary survival run or bootcamp is generally included on your travel, personal accident and health cover: there is no height, no engine and no speed competition within the meaning of the exclusions.

Injuries are usually superficial: grazes, cuts from barbed wire, dirt in the eyes and skin infections after contact with muddy or ditch water. It becomes more awkward at runs with electric shocks, fire or large drops; some insurers class those as an extreme sport.

What is covered in leopard crawling?

Cover depends on the type of event, not on the obstacle itself.

The event

Recreational or extreme

The organiser determines which category your run falls into.

  • An ordinary survival run
  • Electric or fire obstacles
  • A competition with prize money
Yourself

Injury and treatment

Wounds and eye injuries run through health or travel insurance.

  • Treatment abroad
  • Tetanus and wound care
  • Physiotherapy through supplementary cover
Your belongings

Clothing and phone

Damage from the activity itself is rarely baggage damage.

  • Wear always excluded
  • Water in the phone
  • The organiser’s locker

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points on which entrants to obstacle runs are pulled up.

It is the event that is assessed, not the obstacle

The familiar exclusions are mountain sports, air sports, deep diving and speed competitions. Leopard crawling touches none of the four. If the same run does include a climbing wall at height, a jump from a tower or a timed classification, the insurer may still class your entry as a high-risk sport.

Abseiling and your insurance

Your clothing and phone are not baggage damage

Baggage cover excludes damage from normal use, wear and moisture. Mud in a watch or a soaked phone is therefore rarely covered. If you hit a fellow runner with an obstacle, your liability insurance comes into play through Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of event: recreational or extreme
  • Competition or not: a classification counts
  • Destination: at home or abroad
  • Sums insured: mainly for disability
  • Age and fitness: counts on personal accident cover
  • Number of entries per year: one-off or a regular programme

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is leopard crawling a high-risk sport for my insurer?

In itself, no. Crawling under a net or barbed wire falls outside the usual exclusions. The assessment is about the event in which it appears. An obstacle run with height, fire or electricity may well be classed as extreme.

Who pays if I cut myself on barbed wire?

Treatment runs through your health insurance, supplemented abroad by travel insurance. If the obstacle was badly built, you can pursue the organiser. The participation conditions usually contain a waiver that limits this.

Does my personal accident insurance cover permanent injury?

Generally yes for recreational entry. Watch for clauses on professional sport, competitions for prize money and military training. Those are often excluded. Ask for the wording if you enter organised competitive runs.

Is my watch or phone insured during the run?

Rarely. Baggage covers exclude damage from moisture, mud and normal use, and valuables often call for separate insurance. Leave valuable items in the organiser’s locker.

Are you entering an obstacle run?

Send us the programme for the event. We check whether your policy covers your entry.
