Yetiballing and your insurance

Yetiballing means rolling down a snow-covered slope inside a large inflatable ball. It is an attraction at winter sports destinations, not a sport with a governing body, and it does not appear by name in policy conditions.

In brief

Because the name is missing, the insurer looks at the nature of the activity: you roll down a slope at speed without being able to steer or brake. With a recognised operator, on a marked-out course with a safety net, that is often still regarded as a recreational activity and your travel and personal accident cover simply continues.

The risk is not the ball but the outcome: leaving the course, hitting an obstacle, and neck, back and shoulder injuries from the rolling itself. If it happens outside a marked-out course, after après-ski or with a home-made construction, in practice there is no cover.

What is covered in yetiballing?

The assessment depends on the operator, the course and your own condition.

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that keep coming back with attractions at winter sports destinations.

A name without a policy definition creates uncertainty

The standard exclusions are mountain sports, air sports, deep diving and speed competitions. Yetiballing does not automatically fall under that, but neither is it named as covered. So describe the activity factually to your insurer and ask for written confirmation before you take part.

Heliskiing and freeriding

Alcohol turns an accident into your own loss

This activity is often offered during après-ski. If you take part under the influence, the insurer can rely on Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code: no cover in the event of intent or recklessness. An operator can also be liable (Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code), but your own share is weighed against that.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Organised or not — only the first is open to discussion
  • Slope and speed — determines the risk of injury
  • Destination — supervision differs from country to country
  • Duration of the trip — a single day or a whole week
  • Age and health — neck and back complaints count
  • Sums insured — medical expenses and disability

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does yetiballing appear in my policy conditions?

Almost certainly not. Insurers work with categories, not with the names of attractions. Your cover depends on how the activity is classified; so explain factually what you are going to do and ask for confirmation.

Is it a winter sports activity?

Not in the sense of the winter sports module, which is written for skiing and snowboarding. Yetiballing is more likely to be assessed as another recreational activity. Whether the module does anything here depends entirely on the wording.

Who is liable in an accident?

The operator, if the course or the equipment is unsound or supervision falls short. You usually sign a waiver; that does not exclude everything. Record the situation with photographs and keep the terms of participation.

What if I hit someone else?

Your liability insurance then comes into play for the other person's injury. Cover applies only if the activity itself is not excluded and there is no recklessness, for example through drinking alcohol.

Is this on your winter sports programme?

Have it established before you leave whether your policy includes this activity.
