Accident on the ice
- Treatment and transport on the spot
- Repatriation through the emergency assistance centre
- Watch out for competitive play
Ice hockey is neither a mountain sport nor an air sport, but it is a contact sport. Competitive play, dental damage and liability between players all need attention.

Ice hockey does not fall under the classic hazardous sports exclusions. A recreational match or training session is simply covered by travel and personal accident insurance with most insurers. The risk is of a different kind: collisions with the boards, a puck or stick in the face and cuts from skates.
Note three limitations. Some personal accident policies exclude playing sport in a match or league setting, dental costs often fall outside travel cover, and paid or contract play counts as an occupation. Your stick and skates are also sports equipment, with their own limit under the baggage cover.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThree elements determine where you stand: injury, teeth and liability.
Recreational play usually falls within ordinary cover.
Dental damage almost always has its own arrangement.
In sporting situations the threshold is higher than in traffic.

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Two points that decide whether your policy pays after an injury on the ice.
Ice hockey does not appear in the list mountain sports off the beaten track, air sports, deep diving and speed contests. Many personal accident policies do, however, exclude playing sport in a league setting and paid sport. Dental costs are almost always listed separately or fall outside the cover.
If you hit an opponent, that is assessed under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. In a sport and game situation the threshold is higher than outside it: participants accept a degree of risk. Where a foul goes well beyond the rules of the game, liability can arise. Report the incident and leave the assessment to your insurer.
This is what people ask us most.
For travel cover usually not. It does not appear in the list with mountaineering, air sports and deep diving. Personal accident insurers do look at the setting in which you play. League and paid play are among the exclusions for part of the market.
Often not under travel insurance. Dental damage usually falls under your health insurance or under separate dental cover. Keep the treatment invoice and a statement showing that the injury arose from an accident.
Only for conduct that is also unlawful within the sport. A collision within the run of play usually is not. A blow well outside the rules of the game is. Report it to your liability insurer and admit nothing at the scene.
As baggage often yes, with a limit per item for sports equipment. Damage while playing falls under the exclusion for equipment in use. Declare an expensive set of sticks or goalkeeper's kit separately to your insurer in advance.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
Have it confirmed in advance whether competitive play and dental costs are included.
