Borrowing money without a BKR (the Dutch credit register) check: a warning

This page is not an offer. Borrowing without a BKR check does not exist among licensed providers in the Netherlands, and anyone promising it anyway deserves your suspicion.

In brief

Please note: borrowing money costs money. Every provider with a Dutch credit licence is required to consult the BKR for credit from € 250 with a term longer than one month. That check exists to prevent over-borrowing. It is not a formality a provider may skip.

Anyone advertising loans without a BKR check is therefore generally operating without a licence or from abroad. You then miss out on the statutory credit information, the right of withdrawal and access to the complaints institute Kifid. That is not an opportunity, but a warning sign.

Finass Verzekert advises on and arranges non-life insurance under AFM licence 12016589. We do not lend, do not broker credit and deliberately do not refer you to any offer on this page. What we do here is explain how the check works and what you can do if you are refused.

Insurance never stands alone

A mortgage, loan or investment often touches your insurance too. We look at the bigger picture and point you to the right specialist whenever something falls outside insurance itself.

What to look out for when comparing

  • The provider's licence: if the firm is not in the AFM register, stop straight away
  • Advance payment: a deposit, administration fees or payment requests in advance point to fraud
  • A promise without a credit check: no licence holder may skip the BKR check
  • Annual percentage rate: if the APR is missing from the information, the statutory basis is missing
  • How to complain: without membership of Kifid you have nowhere to go in a dispute
  • Your own BKR record: request it and have an incorrect registration corrected

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice.

How it works

  1. You check the providerLook up the name and licence number in the AFM's public register.
  2. You request your BKR recordThat way you know exactly what has been recorded about you and whether it is correct.
  3. You look for help rather than creditIf the payments are a strain, your local authority offers free debt counselling.
  4. We arrange your insuranceFor home, traffic and liability you have come to the right place.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four things to know before you take up such an offer.

The check protects you too

The BKR records current credit and payment arrears. A provider uses that information to assess whether new payments fit alongside your income and fixed outgoings. That is called the creditworthiness assessment. If you are refused, that is a statement about affordability; carrying on looking for a provider that will say yes is usually the most expensive route.

No licence means no protection

With a provider that has no AFM licence you have no right to the European standard information, no right of withdrawal and no access to Kifid. The statutory caps on credit charges and on debt collection costs are also rarely respected by such firms. In a dispute you are, in practice, on your own.

Payment in advance is almost always fraud

Is someone asking first for a deposit, an administration or broking fee, an advance payment via a gift card or a transfer to a foreign account? Then there is usually no loan. A licensed provider charges its costs within the credit and not in advance through payment requests. Also never share a copy of your identity document or your DigiD details.

What you can do instead

Request your own record from the BKR and check that the registration is correct. An unjustified entry can be corrected. If the payments become unmanageable, contact the credit provider about a payment arrangement. Your local authority offers free debt counselling; that costs you nothing and does not harm your position.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I borrow in the Netherlands without a BKR check?

Not from a licensed provider. The law requires the BKR to be consulted for credit from 250 euros with a term longer than one month, plus an assessment of what you can afford. Firms claiming otherwise generally do not hold that licence and therefore also do not offer you the protection that goes with credit.

Why am I registered with the BKR?

Because you have or have had credit from 250 euros with a term longer than one month. That is an ordinary registration and not a criminal record. Only where there are payment arrears is a separate code added, and that remains visible to other providers for years after repayment.

How do I recognise a rogue provider?

By the promise that no assessment is needed, by advance payment of a deposit or administration fees, by the absence of a licence number and a Dutch address, and by pressure to sign quickly. A foreign bank account and contact only through chat are also signs. Always check the firm in the AFM register.

What can I do if I still need money?

First see whether a deferral, a payment arrangement or help with fixed outgoings is possible. Your local authority offers free debt counselling. If licensed providers refuse you, they are saying the payments are not affordable. A more expensive loan from an unsupervised provider almost always makes that situation worse.

Can Finass Verzekert help me get a loan?

No. Our AFM licence covers general insurance only; credit falls under a different category. On this page we deliberately do not refer you to any credit offer, because the subject itself is a warning. For your insurance, personal or business, you can of course come to us.

Your insurance with us after all?

We compare several insurers on premium and conditions and explain which exclusions matter.
