In brief

Please note: borrowing money costs money. How much you can borrow is not for you to decide, and not for us either. A licensed provider assesses your income, your fixed costs and your current credit. That assessment is not a formality but a statutory duty intended to prevent over-borrowing.

Finass Verzekert advises on and arranges non-life insurance. Consumer credit and mortgage credit fall under a different licence category. We therefore do not calculate a loan amount, give no credit advice and do not act as an intermediary. We only explain how the assessment works, so that you can read an offer.

Compare offers on the annual percentage rate (APR), not on the monthly payment. The APR brings interest and costs together in one percentage per year and makes offers comparable. Every licensed provider consults the BKR for credit of € 250 or more with a term of longer than one month.

Who does what with a borrowing question?

What we do not do

Everything to do with the credit itself we leave to parties that hold a licence for it.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a loan that stays affordable and one that does not.

The monthly payment says nothing about the price

A lower monthly payment almost always means a longer term, and therefore more interest in total. So compare on the annual percentage rate and also look at the total cost of credit: the amount you have paid at the end over and above what you borrowed. Two offers with the same monthly payment can differ by hundreds of euros.

What is taken into account in the assessment

The provider looks at your net income, your housing costs, your household composition and fixed obligations such as maintenance payments. Current credit and credit card limits registered with the BKR count as well, even if you do not use them. A student debt is not recorded at the BKR, but you do have to declare it.

A rejection is information, not an obstacle

If you are refused, that says something about how affordable the payments are given your income and expenditure. It is tempting to look further for a party that will say yes. Providers advertising borrowing without a BKR check normally do not hold a Dutch licence. That route is almost always the most expensive and gives you no right of complaint to Kifid (the financial services complaints institute).

Our role and our remuneration

We receive a fee if you submit an application through our referral. In doing so we collect no data ourselves, compare no providers and recommend no product. You are free to choose another party. Check that party in the AFM register before you sign.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Annual percentage rate: the only figure that lets you compare offers fairly
  • Term: borrowing for longer lowers the monthly payment and raises the total price
  • Total cost of credit: what you have paid in total above the amount you borrowed
  • Penalty-free repayment: whether you can make extra repayments without a charge or a threshold
  • BKR check: compulsory from € 250 and a term longer than a month
  • AFM licence: check the provider in the AFM's public register

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does Finass Verzekert calculate how much I can borrow?

No. We advise and act as an intermediary in non-life insurance only and hold no licence for credit. Your borrowing capacity follows from the assessment a licensed provider carries out itself on your income, your fixed costs and the obligations registered against you at the BKR. Here we only explain how that assessment works.

Why does the amount differ from provider to provider?

Within the statutory framework, providers apply their own standards for matters such as rent, household composition and how variable income is counted. The amount calculated can therefore vary. A higher amount is not a better offer: look at the annual percentage rate of charge and at what you can really carry on your income.

Does a credit card I never use count?

Normally it does. What is registered at the BKR is the limit, not the balance used. An unused limit therefore reduces your borrowing capacity. The same applies to revolving credit and instalment payments. If you want to change that, you have to have the limit reduced by the provider or end the product.

What is the difference from a mortgage?

Different statutory standards apply to mortgage credit and the value of the home is taken into account. That too falls under a licence category we do not hold. We do insure the home itself: a lender normally requires buildings insurance (opstalverzekering), and you can take that out through us.

Can I borrow without a BKR check?

In the Netherlands, practically speaking, no. Licence holders are obliged to consult the BKR for credit from € 250 with a term longer than a month. Parties claiming otherwise normally operate without a licence or from abroad. You then miss the statutory protection and the right of complaint that comes with a licence holder.

Would you like your insurance with us?

We compare what several insurers offer and check whether your cover still suits your situation.
