In brief

Please note: borrowing money costs money. Anyone searching for quick loans without a BKR check (*BKR*, the Dutch credit register) is usually looking for a way out of an immediate arrears problem. That is precisely when expensive credit is the worst possible solution. A provider that skips the check charges a price for it that you see back in the total cost of credit.

Every provider with a Dutch licence is required to consult the BKR for credit from € 250 with a term of more than a month. That requirement exists to prevent over-indebtedness. Parties advertising loans without that check generally operate without a licence or from abroad.

Finass Verzekert advises on and arranges non-life insurance. Credit falls under a different licence category. We do not provide loans, do not act as intermediary in them and deliberately do not refer you on from this page: with this search, information is what is called for, not an offer.

A party without a Dutch licence appears in neither column: those obligations do not apply there and you have no right of complaint to Kifid (the financial services complaints institute).

How to recognise an unreliable offer

Four signs that almost always point to a problem.

You have to pay in advance

If you are asked to transfer an amount first for administration charges, a deposit or insurance, that is advance-fee fraud. A licensed provider settles costs within the credit and never asks for money in advance from someone who has not yet received anything. The promised amount never follows.

The provider is not in the AFM register

The AFM (the Dutch financial markets authority) keeps a public register of parties permitted to offer credit or act as intermediary. If the name is not in it, the Dutch rules do not apply and you have no access to Kifid. An address abroad, only a contact form or contact solely through a messaging app are further warning signs.

No APR is stated

A licence holder must state the annual percentage rate in advertising and in the offer and must display the statutory warning. If only a monthly amount or quick payment is mentioned, precisely the figure you need in order to compare is missing. That is rarely an oversight and usually deliberate.

A refusal is protection, not an obstacle

The check exists to prevent you taking on a burden you cannot bear. With a negative BKR entry, searching further for a party that is willing is almost always the most expensive route. Look instead at debt assistance through your local authority, a payment arrangement or a review of your fixed outgoings.

What to look out for when comparing

  • AFM licence: check the provider in the AFM's public register
  • BKR check: compulsory from € 250 and a term longer than one month
  • Annual percentage rate: if it is missing from the advert, comparability is missing
  • Advance payment: any request for money up front points to fraud
  • Right of complaint: only with a licence holder can you go to Kifid
  • Alternatives: a payment arrangement or local authority debt assistance before expensive credit

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do loans without a BKR check exist in the Netherlands?

With a licensed provider, no. The check is compulsory for credit from € 250 with a term of more than a month. Anyone advertising loans without a BKR check generally operates without a Dutch licence. You then lose the statutory information requirements, the cooling-off period and the right of complaint to Kifid.

Does Finass Verzekert act as intermediary in this?

No. We advise and act as intermediary solely in general insurance and hold no licence for credit. On this page we deliberately do not refer you on to a credit provider, because the search itself points to a risky situation. We only explain how the rules work and how to recognise misleading offers.

What if I have a negative entry?

An arrears code remains visible for a number of years after the matter has been settled. That limits your borrowing capacity, but it also protects you. Request your entry from the BKR and check that it is correct. If the code is unjustified, you can ask the provider to correct it and, if necessary, start a dispute.

What can I do in an immediate cash emergency?

Contact the creditor and ask for a payment arrangement. That often achieves more than new credit. Local authorities offer free debt assistance and there are national information points for money matters. An expensive payday loan does not solve a shortfall but increases next month's fixed outgoings.

Where can I check a provider?

In the public register of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets. It states which parties may offer credit or act as intermediary in it. Search on the exact statutory name and not on the trade name from the advert. If you cannot find the party, do not proceed with the application.

Would you like your insurance with us?

We compare what several insurers offer and check whether your cover still suits your situation.
