Third-party liability insurance
- Damage to other vehicles
- Injury to third parties
- Damage to buildings and objects
- Damage caused by passengers
A camper van is a vehicle with a home inside it, and the claims lie just as often in the gas installation, the body and the contents as in the bodywork.

The Bewust camper van insurance from Ansvar Idea has to carry two very different risks at the same time. On the road, the camper van is a motor vehicle subject to compulsory insurance under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), with the claims that go with that: overhanging branches, canopies and barriers caught by its height. When stationary it is living space, with break-ins, water damage and gas leaks as the main causes. Not every policy treats both equally generously.
Own-damage cover concerns the camper van itself: chassis, body and the permanently built-in fittings. Your camping equipment, clothing, kitchen equipment and electronics do not fall under that, but under a separate contents or baggage section with its own limit and its own excess. Theft from the camper van is usually only paid out under that section if there are signs of forced entry.
Solar panels fitted later, a bicycle rack, an awning, a satellite dish or an extra battery pack only count if they were declared when the insurance was taken out. The same applies to the storage location out of season. Both declarations fall under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you also travel with a trailer, see trailer insurance.
We compare your motorhome insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Third-party liability insurance is required by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorhome, not damage to your own motorhome.
Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.
The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Ansvar Idea's comprehensive version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
The line between vehicle and equipment determines which section a claim falls under. Permanently built-in items – kitchen unit, fridge, heating, solar panels on the roof – belong to the camper van. Loose items belong to the contents. A bicycle rack, awning or roof box sits in between and only counts as an accessory if it was declared on the application. Ask for written confirmation of what is insured.
The contents section has a maximum per event and often a lower sub-limit for electronics, jewellery and bicycles. Theft is generally only paid out where there is demonstrable forced entry to the camper van; items that disappear from an open camper van or from an unattended pitch are excluded. Bicycles on the rack, outside the camper van, are often dealt with separately or excluded. Check those sub-limits before you leave.
A leaking gas installation, a burnt-out inverter or a burst water pipe quickly damages the interior of a camper van. Insurers require the gas installation to be inspected periodically and the water tank and pipes to be drained before the frost. If you fail to do so, frost damage counts as the result of negligence and is not paid out. Keep inspection certificates with the policy.
Outside the cover: damp and leak damage that has arisen gradually or results from deferred maintenance of seams and roof penetrations; freezing of the water system where it has not been drained; hire of the camper van to third parties, including through a sharing platform; permanent occupation; damage caused by vermin or pets in the body; and taking part in speed or skill trials.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
This is what people ask us most.
Not under own-damage cover. Loose items fall under a separate contents or baggage section with its own maximum and often lower sub-limits for electronics and bicycles. Theft there is usually only paid out where there are signs of forced entry. Go through the section before you leave and adjust the sum insured if you are taking expensive equipment with you.
That depends on what you have declared. If the policy states that the camper van is stored indoors or on a fenced site and it nevertheless stands in the street for months, the situation differs from the insured risk. Report a change of storage location in advance. Afterwards it becomes a discussion about increased risk and the payout may be reduced.
Only if the cause is sudden, for example hail that penetrates the roof or a collision that tears a seam open. Damp that enters over the years along seams, windows or roof penetrations counts as the result of deferred maintenance and remains outside the cover. A periodic damp reading therefore matters for more than just the residual value.
Occasional lending without payment is usually covered, provided the driver holds the correct driving licence category and meets the age conditions. Hiring out for payment, including through a sharing platform, is a different use from the one insured and is almost always outside the cover. If you want to hire out the vehicle, a separate arrangement is needed for that.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
