In brief

A van is rarely stolen for the van. It is broken open for what is inside. On the Crafter that means damage in two layers: the wrecked sliding door, lock and pillar, and the loss of the contents. The first layer falls under your own-damage cover. The second falls under no car policy at all.

Tools, stock and materials belong on a own goods in transit insurance or on tool cover within your business package. That usually comes with a night clause: outside working hours the van has to be empty or standing on a closed site. Anyone who does not comply with that condition has paid for the cover but not obtained it.

For the passenger car models of the same make, we refer you to Volkswagen car insurance; the difference between the types of cover is set out on comprehensive cover.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The contents are not on the car policy

What is in the load space is not part of the vehicle and therefore falls neither under own-damage cover nor under your business contents insurance, which only works at the business address. There is a separate goods-in-transit policy for that. When taking out the policy, declare realistically what travels with you, including measuring equipment and cordless tools; insuring for too little leads to underinsurance and therefore to a proportionate payment.

The night clause is a hard condition

Virtually every tool cover sets requirements for the night: empty the van, or keep it in a locked garage or on a fenced site. That is not advice but a condition of cover. If the loaded van stands in the street and is broken open, there is no cover, not even where there are visible signs of forced entry. Record where the van stands at night and keep to it.

Break-in damage to the van itself

A forced sliding door, a wrecked lock barrel or a drilled-out lock is damage to the vehicle and falls under third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover, not under third-party liability. Your excess applies per event, and with repeated break-ins that mounts up. Insurers then look at the security: additional locks, an approved alarm system and where the van is kept all count in acceptance and premium.

What is excluded

Not covered are: tools, stock and cargo; theft of loose accessories and navigation equipment that have not been declared; damage because the van was left unlocked or with the key in it; and wear or mechanical defects. If you do not meet the security or storage requirement, the own-damage cover for theft lapses. Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code excludes intent and recklessness.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Storage location. In the street, on a driveway or on a closed business site each produces a different theft risk.
  • Security level. Additional locks, deadlocks and an approved alarm system are taken into account and sometimes required.
  • Postcode where the van is based. The break-in and theft picture differs widely from area to area and feeds through into the rate.
  • Claims history. Earlier break-ins at the same address weigh heavily in the acceptance of own-damage cover.
  • Value and equipment of the van. The version, year of manufacture and accessories declared together determine the amount at stake in the event of theft.
  • Cover and excess chosen. For theft and break-in damage, at least third-party, fire and theft is needed. The excess applies per event.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Are my tools insured on the car policy?

No. What is in the load space does not belong to the vehicle and therefore falls outside every car insurance policy. Your business contents insurance usually covers only the business address. You need a goods-in-transit policy of your own or tool cover, with a sum insured that matches what is actually in the van, including cordless tools and measuring equipment.

Do I have to empty the van at night?

That depends on the clause on your policy. Many tool covers require the van to be empty outside working hours or to stand in a locked space. If you cannot meet that, report it in advance. Sometimes heavier security is an alternative. Otherwise it emerges at the first break-in that the cover founders on that condition.

Who pays for the damage to the forced sliding door?

That break-in damage falls under third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover, with your excess per event. If you have third-party liability only, the repair remains at your expense. Report even a small break-in; where they recur, insurers look at the security and can set additional requirements, but without a notification the evidence will be missing on a larger claim.

What if the van was left unlocked?

There is then usually no cover in the event of theft. The same applies where the key was left in the ignition or could be taken from a known place. Insurers regard that as negligence that materially increases the risk. The requirement applies to a short stop on the building site as well; locking up and switching on the alarm are not formalities but conditions of cover.
