Admission to the piste
- Arrange permission in advance
- Compulsory safety strap
- Open pistes only
A skibob is a steerable frame on skis on which you descend seated. It reaches high speeds, and that determines both your cover and your liability.

On a skibob you sit on a saddle between two skis and steer with the front ski, with short foot skis for support. Used recreationally on an open piste, some insurers include this under the winter sports cover, but by no means every policy names the device. Many ski areas also require separate permission or a pass.
The risk lies in the speed and the stopping distance. A skibob brakes differently from skis and collisions with other piste users end more seriously. A skibob is not a motor vehicle, so the insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) does not apply here; your liability runs through ordinary personal liability insurance, provided that policy does not exclude the sport.
We compare your travel insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Get coveredThree things determine your position: permission from the ski area, use on or off the piste, and your liability.
Not every ski area allows skibobs on every lift or slope.
Off the marked piste, cover usually lapses.
Injury to others in a collision is the largest item.

What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive in advance.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Two points that decide whether your policy pays after a collision on the piste.
Travel and personal accident policies generally exclude off-piste mountain sports, air sports, diving below a stated depth and taking part in speed contests. The skibob was originally a competition device; record attempts and timed runs therefore always fall outside cover, even with an additional winter sports module.
If you ride into someone, you are liable under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code; the FIS rules of conduct on the piste are used as the yardstick. Riding without the compulsory safety strap, outside opening hours or after drinking alcohol may count as reckless (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code). Report a claim immediately (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).
This is what people ask us most.
With some insurers it does, provided you stay on an open piste. Many conditions name only skiing and snowboarding. Ask for written confirmation for this device in advance.
No. A skibob has no engine and is not a motor vehicle, so Article 2 of the WAM does not apply. Your ordinary personal liability insurance has to carry the loss, provided the sport is not excluded.
Not as a matter of course. Ski areas set their own rules: a day pass for skibobs, a compulsory safety strap and sometimes a ban on certain lifts. Riding contrary to those rules costs you your cover.
As sports equipment it falls under baggage cover, with a maximum per item. Damage arising during use is almost always excluded; theft from a locked space sometimes is covered.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
Have it confirmed before you leave whether the device is insured. We find out which insurer accepts this.
