Liability
- Compulsory on a Segway
- On a mobility scooter, depending on the type
- Sometimes through the AVP
In law a mobility scooter falls into a different category from a Segway, and that determines whether third-party liability insurance is compulsory. For your own vehicle you need own-damage cover in any event.

A mobility scooter counts as a disability vehicle. Different rules apply to it than to a moped; have your situation checked, because the insurance obligation depends on the type and the top speed.
A Segway is a special moped and therefore does have a registration and compulsory third-party liability insurance.
Quite apart from the legal obligation, own-damage cover is almost always sensible: these vehicles cost several thousand euros, often stand outdoors or in a communal storage room, and the battery is a sought-after component.
We compare your moped insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
For a Segway, third-party liability cover is compulsory. For a mobility scooter it depends on the type and the speed, and sometimes the cover runs through your liability insurance. Have that established before you take anything out.
If the vehicle stands in a communal storage room or in the hallway of a block of flats, additional requirements often apply to theft cover.
The battery is expensive and sought after. Check whether it is included in the cover, and whether damage from charging falls outside it.
Without a mobility scooter you have no mobility. Cover with a replacement vehicle or a quick repair matters more here than a few euros' difference in premium.
This is what people ask us most.

Generally not, or only indoors. Theft from a storage room or from the street calls for a separate policy.
The ownership position is then different and cover is sometimes already arranged. Ask about that before you insure twice over.
Usually yes, as part of the vehicle, but damage from incorrect charging is excluded practically everywhere. Always use the original charger.
Only with a policy that expressly offers it. For anyone who depends on the vehicle, that is often the most important part of the cover.
