In brief

ROV pilots work on underwater inspections, cable and pipeline routes, offshore installations and ships' hulls. The damage you cause is rarely to the ROV itself but to the object you are inspecting.

The biggest risk is loss caused by downtime: if you strike a pipeline or cable, not only repair follows but also lost production at the client's end. That is pure financial loss and is not automatically insured.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your personal liability insurance (AVP) across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Annual turnover: the main basis for calculation
  • Type of assignments: inspection, intervention or survey
  • Working area: inland waters, coastal waters or offshore
  • Value of the equipment deployed
  • Sum insured per claim
  • Certification and claims history

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Downtime losses are the big item

A pipeline or power cable struck shuts down production or the power supply. That loss is many times the cost of the repair and is not automatically covered by the AVB.

Care, custody and control in inspection work

You work on the object you inspect; damage to it falls under the care, custody and control exclusion. Without that cover the core of your work is uninsured.

The ROV itself is not an AVB matter

You insure your own vehicle, umbilical and topside equipment as plant, not through the liability policy.

Insure offshore work expressly

Work outside territorial waters is excluded on a regular AVB.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What are downtime losses in my trade?

The financial loss a client suffers because production or transport is at a standstill after a pipeline or cable is damaged. It runs high and is separate cover.

Is damage to the object being inspected covered?

Not as standard; that is care, custody and control. Ask for care, custody and control cover, because this is exactly where you work.

Is my ROV covered?

No. The AVB covers liability towards others. You insure your own ROV and topside equipment as plant.

Does the policy apply offshore?

Only if that is insured expressly; otherwise the cover applies only within territorial waters.

Which sum insured do clients require?

That is set out in the contract or specification and varies widely by sector. In industry and petrochemicals it is often several million per claim. Ask for the requirement before you tender.

What is the difference between the AVB and the BAV?

The AVB covers damage to property and injury to people. The BAV covers pure financial loss: financial disadvantage caused by an error, without anything being broken or anyone being injured. In downtime and delay claims, that is the difference that counts.
