Liability insurance for a railway safety officer

Alongside the railway, loss is not counted in materials but in minutes. A release given wrongly or too late costs delay, and that is passed on.

In brief

Railway safety staff, work site safety supervisors and lookouts make sure that work alongside or on the track is carried out safely. The AVB covers the property damage and injury that arise in the process.

The distinguishing risk is loss due to delay: if a possession goes wrong or lasts longer, a claim from the carrier or infrastructure manager follows. That is pure financial loss and it does not fall under a standard AVB.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your personal liability insurance (AVP) across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. What does your premium depend on?

  • Annual turnover or payroll: the main basis for calculation
  • Type of activities: safety, inspection or construction
  • Number of employees alongside the track
  • Sum insured per claim
  • Certification and safety passes
  • Claims history

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Loss through delay is the heart of it

Claims are calculated per minute of delay and per train affected. Without separate cover for financial loss you bear that yourself.

Certification and safety pass

Working alongside the track calls for valid certification and a safety pass. Insurers ask about that when underwriting.

Process records

Record the times at which the possession was requested, took effect and was lifted. If there is a claim, that is your file.

Injury weighs heavily here

A collision with rolling stock is by definition serious. Set the sum insured to match what the client requires by contract.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What is loss through delay?

The financial claim from a carrier or infrastructure manager because trains are delayed. It is calculated per minute and mounts up quickly.

Does loss through delay fall under the AVB?

No. It is pure financial loss without property damage or injury; separate cover is needed for that.

Which certification is required?

Valid professional certificates for working alongside the track plus a safety pass for each employee.

What sum insured is usual?

That is set out in the contract with the client. In the rail sector the amounts required are high because of the injury and delay risk.

Which sum insured do clients require?

That is set out in the contract or specification and varies widely by sector. In industry and petrochemicals it is often several million per claim. Ask for the requirement before you tender.

What is the difference between the AVB and the BAV?

The AVB covers damage to property and injury to people. The BAV covers pure financial loss: financial disadvantage caused by an error, without anything being broken or anyone being injured. In downtime and delay claims, that is the difference that counts.
